The LV Switchgear team in Burnfoot are looking for a Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer.

Job Purpose

A key member of the Switchgear Product Development team in design, development and validation of LV switchgear, ensuring compliance with IEC 61439 and other applicable standards.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Design: Create 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings for switchgear panels, enclosures, frames, and busbar supports using CAD software - especially Solidworks.
  • IEC 61439 Compliance: Ensure designs meet IEC 61439 requirements for design verification, including structural integrity, IP rating (protection degree), and clearance/creepage distances.
  • Thermal Management: Design ventilation systems and perform heat dissipation calculations to ensure internal components operate within safe temperature limits.
  • Bill of Materials (BOM): Prepare detailed mechanical BOMs, including structural components, sheet metal parts, busbar systems, and assembly hardware.
  • Production Support: Provide technical support to the shop floor, troubleshooting sheet metal operations and assembly issues.
  • Testing Support: Assist in Type Testing (short-circuit, temperature rise) and Routine Testing (insulation, functional checks).

Knowledge of general Standards and design best practice Design Verification

  • Sheet Metal Manufacturing: Understanding of sheet metal operations, welding, and plating processes for switchboard manufacturing.
  • Busbar Design: Experience in designing, supporting, and sizing copper or aluminum busbars for structural integrity under short-circuit conditions.

Requirements

  • Education: Third level qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Skills: Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks) and AutoCAD. Use of MS Office apps.
  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of LV electrical components (breakers, contactors).
  • Behavioural: Strong communication skills for working with engineers, clients, and production teams.
  • 1+ year experience in similar role - this can be the placement year.

Key Competencies

  • Prototyping & Validation: Hands-on experience with prototyping and validation, specifically for switchgear enclosures.
  • Value Engineering: Experience reducing product cost without sacrificing compliance or quality.
  • Component Knowledge: Expertise in Circuit Breakers, Switch Devices, and Control Gear.
