Job Description – Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer PositionProtection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer – MV & LV Protection SystemsQualification & ExperienceB.E./B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering.7–12 years of relevant experience in protection relay programming, testing, commissioning, and protection/control systems. Predominantly experienced in MV switchgear, control and relay panels, and electrical protection systems. Core Technical ExpertiseHands-on experience in protection relay programming, configuration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting for MV and LV protection systems. Strong experience with protection relays from:
ABBSiemensSchneider ElectricExperience with platforms such as ABB Relion, Siemens SIPROTEC, Schneider Easergy/SEPAM, or equivalent. Strong knowledge of protection schemes including overcurrent, earth fault, directional protection, under/over-voltage, under/over-frequency, transformer, motor, and busbar protection. Ability to interpret SLDs, protection schematics, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection philosophies. Hands-on experience in secondary injection testing, functional testing, trip testing, interlock verification, and end-to-end protection testing. Experience with OMICRON or equivalent relay test equipment is highly preferred. Experience in FAT, SAT, commissioning, site testing, troubleshooting, and final validation of MV/LV protection systems. Ability to verify relay settings against approved protection coordination studies. Preparation and review of relay setting files, test procedures, test reports, commissioning reports, and protection documentation. Communication & Networking ExpertiseStrong hands-on knowledge of industrial communication networks and complete communication topology associated with MV/LV protection and control systems. Practical experience with:
Modbus RTUModbus TCP/IPProfibusProfinetIEC 61850Industrial Ethernet communicationStrong understanding of IEC 61850 architecture, including IEDs, Station Bus, Process Bus, GOOSE, MMS, and SCL configuration. Ability to configure and troubleshoot communication mapping, data points, alarms, status, commands, measurements, events, and protection signals. Understanding of network switches, VLANs, IP addressing, gateways, network redundancy, and basic network diagnostics. Ability to troubleshoot communication issues across the complete chain—from protection relay/IED through network infrastructure, PLC/RTU, SCADA/EPMS, and higher-level systems. Control, SCADA & System ArchitectureThorough understanding of the complete protection, control, and communication system architecture. Experience integrating protection relays with PLC, RTU, SCADA, EPMS/BMS, and other supervisory control systems. Ability to understand and review communication architecture drawings, network topology, I/O lists, signal lists, communication matrices, and cause-and-effect diagrams. Experience in FAT/SAT and end-to-end communication testing, including verification of commands, status, alarms, trips, measurements, events, and interlocks. Desired Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate should be a complete Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer with strong hands-on experience—not limited to relay software configuration. He should be capable of independently handling the complete lifecycle of a protection system, including relay programming, protection setting implementation, logic development, secondary injection testing, functional testing, communication configuration, FAT/SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and final system validation. The candidate should have a thorough understanding of MV protection systems, control and relay panels, protection coordination, industrial communication protocols, and the complete relay-to-SCADA/EPMS architecture. Strong practical experience with ABB, Siemens, and Schneider protection relays, together with Modbus, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, Profinet, and IEC 61850, is highly desirable. Experience in MV switchgear manufacturing, system integration, protection engineering, testing, and commissioning will be strongly preferred.
