Job Description – Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer Position

Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer – MV & LV Protection Systems

Qualification & Experience

  • B.E./B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering.
  • 7–12 years of relevant experience in protection relay programming, testing, commissioning, and protection/control systems.
  • Predominantly experienced in MV switchgear, control and relay panels, and electrical protection systems.

Core Technical Expertise

  • Hands-on experience in protection relay programming, configuration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting for MV and LV protection systems.
  • Strong experience with protection relays from:
    • ABB
    • Siemens
    • Schneider Electric
  • Experience with platforms such as ABB Relion, Siemens SIPROTEC, Schneider Easergy/SEPAM, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of protection schemes including overcurrent, earth fault, directional protection, under/over-voltage, under/over-frequency, transformer, motor, and busbar protection.
  • Ability to interpret SLDs, protection schematics, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection philosophies.
  • Hands-on experience in secondary injection testing, functional testing, trip testing, interlock verification, and end-to-end protection testing.
  • Experience with OMICRON or equivalent relay test equipment is highly preferred.
  • Experience in FAT, SAT, commissioning, site testing, troubleshooting, and final validation of MV/LV protection systems.
  • Ability to verify relay settings against approved protection coordination studies.
  • Preparation and review of relay setting files, test procedures, test reports, commissioning reports, and protection documentation.

Communication & Networking Expertise

  • Strong hands-on knowledge of industrial communication networks and complete communication topology associated with MV/LV protection and control systems.
  • Practical experience with:
    • Modbus RTU
    • Modbus TCP/IP
    • Profibus
    • Profinet
    • IEC 61850
    • Industrial Ethernet communication
  • Strong understanding of IEC 61850 architecture, including IEDs, Station Bus, Process Bus, GOOSE, MMS, and SCL configuration.
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot communication mapping, data points, alarms, status, commands, measurements, events, and protection signals.
  • Understanding of network switches, VLANs, IP addressing, gateways, network redundancy, and basic network diagnostics.
  • Ability to troubleshoot communication issues across the complete chain—from protection relay/IED through network infrastructure, PLC/RTU, SCADA/EPMS, and higher-level systems.

Control, SCADA & System Architecture

  • Thorough understanding of the complete protection, control, and communication system architecture.
  • Experience integrating protection relays with PLC, RTU, SCADA, EPMS/BMS, and other supervisory control systems.
  • Ability to understand and review communication architecture drawings, network topology, I/O lists, signal lists, communication matrices, and cause-and-effect diagrams.
  • Experience in FAT/SAT and end-to-end communication testing, including verification of commands, status, alarms, trips, measurements, events, and interlocks.

Desired Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should be a complete Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer with strong hands-on experience—not limited to relay software configuration.

He should be capable of independently handling the complete lifecycle of a protection system, including relay programming, protection setting implementation, logic development, secondary injection testing, functional testing, communication configuration, FAT/SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and final system validation.

The candidate should have a thorough understanding of MV protection systems, control and relay panels, protection coordination, industrial communication protocols, and the complete relay-to-SCADA/EPMS architecture.

Strong practical experience with ABB, Siemens, and Schneider protection relays, together with Modbus, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, Profinet, and IEC 61850, is highly desirable.

Experience in MV switchgear manufacturing, system integration, protection engineering, testing, and commissioning will be strongly preferred.
