Senior Quantity Surveyor in Blackburn

Blackburn Full-Time On-site

Vertical Recruitment is working with a growing independent property and construction consultancy looking to appoint a Senior Quantity Surveyor to support its expanding portfolio of projects across the North West and wider UK.

The consultancy provides a range of services across Quantity Surveying, Project Management and Development Management, working closely with private developers, investors, local authorities and other organisations to deliver projects from initial feasibility through to construction and completion.

Its portfolio spans residential developments, purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA), commercial refurbishment, heritage-led regeneration, education, mixed-use schemes and wider public sector developments.

Unlike larger, more corporate consultancy environments, the business takes a personal and collaborative approach to project delivery, with senior team members remaining closely involved in both clients and projects.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Quantity Surveyor who enjoys taking ownership of commissions, building strong client relationships and working across a varied portfolio of developments.

You'll join an experienced team of project and commercial professionals, with the opportunity to take on significant responsibility, contribute to the continued development of the Quantity Surveying offering and progress as the business grows.

The Role

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you'll be responsible for providing cost management and commercial advice across a range of construction and property development projects.

Working closely with clients, Project Managers, Development Managers and wider consultant teams, you'll support projects throughout the full development lifecycle, from early feasibility and cost planning through to procurement, construction and final account.

The position offers a good balance of technical Quantity Surveying, client advisory work and wider involvement in the development process.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading Quantity Surveying commissions across residential, commercial, regeneration and public sector developments.
  • Preparing feasibility estimates, cost plans and project budgets throughout the design and pre-construction stages.
  • Providing commercial advice to clients, identifying opportunities for value engineering and cost optimisation.
  • Developing procurement strategies and preparing tender documentation, including bills of quantities and schedules of work where required.
  • Managing tender processes, undertaking contractor evaluations and providing recommendations on appointments.
  • Administering construction contracts, including valuations, variations, change control and final accounts.
  • Monitoring project costs, cash flow and financial performance, providing regular reporting and advice to clients.
  • Identifying and managing commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Working alongside Project Managers and Development Managers to ensure commercial objectives align with wider project requirements.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with clients, contractors, consultants and other project stakeholders.
  • Supporting junior members of the team through technical guidance and mentoring.
  • Contributing to the continued development of the consultancy's cost management services.

About You

We're looking to speak with experienced Quantity Surveyors who have a strong understanding of the construction and property development process and are comfortable managing commissions with a good degree of independence.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience operating at Senior Quantity Surveyor level within a construction, property or multidisciplinary consultancy.
  • A relevant degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
  • MRICS qualification or progress towards chartership would be advantageous.
  • Strong pre- and post-contract Quantity Surveying experience.
  • Experience managing projects from initial feasibility and cost planning through to construction and final account.
  • Good working knowledge of JCT contracts and construction procurement processes.
  • Experience across residential, commercial, refurbishment, regeneration or public sector developments.
  • Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to identify risks and provide practical advice to clients.
  • Confidence managing client relationships and communicating with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • The ability to manage multiple commissions, prioritise workloads and work independently.

Experience working in a smaller consultancy environment, or an interest in taking on broader responsibility beyond traditional cost management, would be particularly relevant.

Candidates from larger consultancy backgrounds who are looking for greater autonomy and closer involvement in project delivery would also be of interest.

What's On Offer

This opportunity offers the chance to join a growing independent consultancy with an established portfolio of clients and projects.

The business operates with a relatively close-knit team, providing the opportunity to work directly with experienced senior professionals and develop strong relationships with clients.

Benefits of the opportunity include:

  • A varied portfolio of residential, commercial, regeneration and public sector projects.
  • The opportunity to manage your own commissions and work directly with clients.
  • Exposure to wider Project Management and Development Management services.
  • A collaborative working environment with direct access to senior leadership.
  • Greater involvement in project decisions and the wider development process.
  • Opportunities for professional development and progression as the business continues to grow.
  • The chance to contribute to the development of the Quantity Surveying service.

For someone looking to move away from a more structured corporate consultancy environment, this could offer a different working experience, with greater ownership of projects and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a growing business.
