Vertical Recruitment is working with an established multidisciplinary consultancy looking to appoint an Associate Civil Engineer to take a senior position within its Civil Engineering team.
The business has an established presence across North Wales and the North West, delivering engineering, environmental and planning services to clients across the private and public sectors.
This opportunity would suit an experienced Principal or Associate Civil Engineer who enjoys remaining involved in technical delivery but is also looking for greater responsibility in leading projects, developing a team and influencing the direction of a growing civil engineering offering.
The consultancy has a varied workload spanning residential and commercial development, highways, drainage, utilities, water infrastructure and wider site development projects.
The Opportunity
This is a senior, client-facing position offering a balance between technical project delivery, team leadership and commercial responsibility.
You'll be involved in managing a portfolio of civil engineering commissions, working closely with other disciplines and supporting the continued development of the team.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Leading the delivery of civil engineering projects across development infrastructure, highways, drainage and utilities.
- Providing technical direction and oversight, ensuring designs are coordinated, practical and delivered to the required standards.
- Managing project teams, programmes, resources and commercial performance.
- Taking responsibility for key client relationships and acting as a senior point of contact throughout project delivery.
- Supporting and mentoring engineers and technicians, helping to develop technical capability within the team.
- Working alongside structural, geotechnical, environmental and planning specialists on multidisciplinary commissions.
- Contributing to new project opportunities, client development and the longer-term growth of the Civil Engineering team.
Importantly, this isn't a position focused solely on management or business development. There is a continued expectation to remain closely involved in projects, technical decisions and client delivery.
Project Exposure
The consultancy works across a broad range of development and infrastructure projects, including:
- Residential and mixed-use developments
- Commercial, industrial and logistics schemes
- Highways, access roads and associated infrastructure
- Drainage, SuDS and flood management
- Water, wastewater and utilities infrastructure
- Earthworks and multidisciplinary site development
- Public-sector infrastructure and improvement programmes
The immediate focus is on development infrastructure, highways and drainage, although experience across water, utilities or wider civil engineering projects would also be valuable.
About You
We're interested in speaking with experienced Civil Engineers who have progressed into a position of technical and project leadership within a consultancy environment.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered status with the ICE, or equivalent professional recognition.
- A strong consultancy background, ideally at Principal or Associate level.
- Technical expertise in highways, drainage, SuDS and development infrastructure.
- Experience leading projects from early design through to approvals and construction.
- Confidence managing clients, project teams and commercial responsibilities.
- Experience supporting junior engineers and overseeing technical work.
- A good understanding of relevant UK design standards and approval processes.
Experience with Civil 3D, Causeway Flow, AutoTrack or similar software would be beneficial.
The business is open to individuals from different civil engineering backgrounds, provided they have the technical credibility, leadership experience and commercial understanding required for a senior appointment.
What's on Offer?
- Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
- Flexible working arrangements across North Wales and the North West.
- 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days with service.
- Private medical care and company pension.
- Continued professional development and technical support.
- A varied portfolio of civil engineering and multidisciplinary projects.
- The opportunity to influence team development, project delivery and future growth.
- Longer-term progression towards broader senior leadership and Director-level responsibilities.
- Potential opportunity for share ownership within an employee-owned business.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Civil Engineer looking for a position with genuine influence over technical delivery, people development and the future direction of an established team, without stepping away from the projects themselves
