An established structural engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to join its Derby office. This is a senior technical role offering the chance to take ownership of a varied portfolio of projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the growth and success of a dynamic design team.
The office undertakes projects ranging from multi-storey commercial structures to small residential schemes, with construction values from approximately £250,000 up to £30M. Many projects are delivered to BIM Level 2, using modern design tools alongside traditional hand calculations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the structural design of projects using steel, timber, masonry and reinforced concrete, incorporating sound geotechnical principles.
- Prepare technical drawings and calculations using AutoCAD and industry-standard software such as TEDDS, TEKLA, CSC Portal Frame Designer.
- Review and quality-assure designs from concept through to construction.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, helping them achieve professional accreditation (ICE or IStructE).
- Communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams, both verbally and in writing.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high technical standards.
About You
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
- Significant consultancy experience at Principal or Senior Structural Engineer level.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and familiarity with TEDDS, TEKLA, CSC Portal Frame Designer (or willingness to learn).
- A collaborative team ethic while also able to work independently.
- Excellent organisational, communication and presentation skills.
- Ambition to develop their career and support the professional development of others.
Chartered status (or working towards chartership) is preferred, but support will be provided for the right candidate to achieve professional accreditation.
