Vertical Recruitment is working with an established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy looking to appoint an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join its growing team. The consultancy provides specialist engineering, environmental and planning services across a broad range of infrastructure and development projects, with particular involvement in rail, industrial, mining, waste management and wider civil engineering schemes. This opportunity would suit a Geotechnical Engineer with a strong technical background who is looking to take greater ownership of projects, develop client relationships and progress towards Principal level. The position offers a varied combination of geotechnical design, ground investigation, technical reporting and site-based work, alongside the opportunity to collaborate with experienced civil, structural and environmental specialists. The Opportunity You'll be involved in the investigation, assessment and design of geotechnical solutions across a varied portfolio of projects, taking responsibility for technical delivery and working directly with clients, contractors and wider project teams. Key responsibilities will include: * Planning and managing ground investigations, including site works, testing programmes and specialist contractors. * Interpreting ground investigation data and preparing geotechnical reports, ground models and technical recommendations. * Undertaking geotechnical design and assessment across foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, slopes and ground improvement. * Managing individual projects and technical packages, including programmes, fees, resources and deliverables. * Supporting the design and assessment of embankments, cuttings, platforms and other infrastructure-related ground engineering works. * Providing technical advice during construction, including responding to site queries and reviewing contractor proposals. * Working closely with civil, structural and environmental engineers, clients and specialist contractors to develop coordinated solutions. * Supporting junior engineers and technicians, reviewing technical work and contributing to their development. * Assisting with technical proposals, project reporting and the continued development of client relationships. The role provides the opportunity to build on existing technical experience while gaining greater responsibility for project management, design decisions and client engagement. Project Exposure The consultancy delivers geotechnical engineering services across rail and transportation, industrial and commercial development, mining and quarrying, waste management and wider infrastructure projects. Typical commissions involve ground investigations, slope stability, embankments, cuttings, foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, ground improvement and the assessment of existing infrastructure. Experience across every sector isn't essential. A strong grounding in geotechnical investigation, interpretation and design is the priority, with infrastructure or complex ground engineering experience particularly relevant. About You We're interested in speaking with Geotechnical Engineers who have developed a strong technical foundation and are ready to take on greater responsibility for projects and design delivery. Ideally, you'll have: * A degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology or a related discipline. * Approximately 5–8 years' relevant experience within geotechnical engineering, ground engineering or engineering consultancy. * Experience planning and coordinating ground investigations, including site works, testing and contractor management. * Strong technical reporting, ground interpretation and geotechnical assessment skills. * Design experience across foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, slope stability or ground improvement. * Familiarity with relevant geotechnical analysis and design software. * Experience managing technical packages or smaller projects, including programme, budget and quality requirements. * Confidence working with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams. * An understanding of UK geotechnical design standards, Eurocodes and CDM requirements. * Progress towards Chartered Engineer or Chartered Geologist status, alongside a full UK driving licence. Experience in rail, infrastructure, mining, waste or complex development projects would be particularly advantageous. What's on Offer? * Competitive salary, dependent on experience. * Flexible working arrangements. * 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days with service. * Private medical care, company pension and continued professional development. * Exposure to varied geotechnical and multidisciplinary infrastructure projects. * Opportunities to develop technical expertise alongside experienced engineering specialists. * Greater responsibility for project delivery, technical design and client relationships. * Clear progression towards Principal Geotechnical Engineer level. * Potential opportunity for share ownership within an employee-owned business.
