Our Mission At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky. What to Expect As a Senior BMS Systems Engineer, you will join a dynamic team of passionate professionals whose primary focus is on the development and integration of advanced Battery Management Systems for our fully electric VX4 aircraft. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring our BMS technology meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance. A typical day could involve leading systems engineering development for in-house BMS projects, conducting hands-on testing and debugging activities, or coordinating with external suppliers and contractors to deliver cutting-edge battery management solutions. You’ll also be interfacing with other aircraft systems and supporting integration activities across our wider engineering teams. Your ability to take full ownership of complex systems engineering work packages, lead requirements validation activities, and perform detailed design reviews will be key to your success in this role.
What You’ll Do:
- Take full ownership and responsibility of the BMS Systems Engineering Work Packages
- Lead the systems engineering development for in-house BMS/HW projects
- Lead BMS requirements capture, validation, and verification activities
- Own the interfacing with other aircraft systems
- Conduct hands-on testing and debugging activities
- Lead the integration of the BMS with the HV Electrical System
- Coordinate external development suppliers/contractors when required
- Support integration and validation into the aircraft, assisting colleagues as needed and perform design reviews for BMS development, including DFMEA, FTA, FMECA etc
- Identify and track specific assignments and deliverables, providing assessments on progress and outcomes on a day-to-day basis
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics, Electrical, Electronics, Aerospace, Systems, or Computer Engineering or related engineering field
- Extensive proven experience in hardware development for aerospace or automotive industries
- Experience with Battery Management Systems
- Strong background in Systems Engineering
- Good understanding of network protocols including CAN, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, ARINC
- Experience with requirements management
- Experience with FMEA, DFMEA, FTA and single component failure analysis
- Experience with functional safety, aircraft or automotive standards including DO-178, DO-254, ARP 4754, ARP 4761 and DO-160, ISO 26262, IEC 61508 and/or derived requirements
- Desired High Voltage training and advanced battery design/development experience
- Previous experience working in aerospace or electric aviation
- Experience with verification and validation processes for safety-critical systems
- Knowledge of certification processes for aerospace applications
