Location: Bristol Office / Kemble, Cotswolds
Employment Type: Full time
Our Mission: At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The Valo, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky. We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices. We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals. Valo is targeting airliner-level safety certification in 2028 ahead of entering service with our airline and operator customers.
What to expect
We are seeking a highly capable Avionics Systems Engineer to join the Cockpit & Cabin Systems team, focusing on the design, development, and integration of the cockpit systems, which includes the display and compute avionics system, the aircraft sensors, and the cockpit controls. The successful candidate will apply systems engineering principles to define and deliver these systems with Vertical’s supply chain, with a particular focus on the display and compute system, and the flight management and flight guidance system.
What you'll do
- Display & Compute System: Validate and verify display and compute system requirements to ensure that the cockpit displays meet the needs of future Valo pilots across the entire product lifecycle. Collaborate with system teams to design low-level ICDs, define software and hardware interfaces, and drive system integration activities to ensure seamless interoperability between avionics components. Support simulation, verification, and validation activities, contributing to a robust, pilot-centric flight deck architecture that meets certification and operational goals.
- Flight Management & Flight Guidance: Lead the specification, architecture, and integration of flight management and flight guidance functionality within the display and compute system. Collaborate with the Flight Control team, as well as the Vertical test pilots, to ensure the system is appropriately tailored for Valo operations.
- Systems Engineering & Requirements Management: Capture, refine, and manage system and subsystem requirements. Develop functional, logical and physical architectures, using model-based approaches. Deliver systems engineering documentation to support design reviews, compliance demonstrations, and internal design baselines.
- Integration & Verification: Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure system compatibility across avionics domains. Define and execute verification and validation activities in laboratory and flight test environments, ensuring compliance with system-level requirements and safety objectives.
What you'll bring
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in aerospace engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline. Additional training or experience in systems engineering is highly desirable.
- Demonstrable experience in avionics or flight deck systems engineering.
- Experience working on flight management, flight guidance, or cockpit display integration projects.
- Experience owning avionics LRUs through the V lifecycle.
- Experience collaborating with certification authorities and applying civil aviation standards.
- In-depth knowledge of avionics and flight deck systems architecture.
- Familiarity with ARP4754, ARP4761 processes.
- Experience using model-based systems engineering and requirements management tools (e.g., MATLAB System Composer, Cameo, DOORS, JAMA).
- Excellent analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Experience with PLM tools (Dassault 3DX, Teamcenter, etc).
