An established engineering company based in Crawley, West Sussex is looking to recruit a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a range of innovative products, taking concepts through to manufacture while collaborating with internal teams and external suppliers.
The Role
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing new products from concept through to production, ensuring designs meet performance, cost and manufacturing requirements. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including electronics, manufacturing and NPI to deliver high-quality, commercially viable products.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical products from concept through to manufacture
- Produce detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks
- Ensure designs meet cost, performance and manufacturing requirements
- Work closely with internal teams including electronics, NPI and production
- Liaise with external suppliers and manufacturing partners
- Prepare files for rapid prototyping and support product validation
- Manage your own workload and track progress against project timelines
- Conduct design reviews and support DFMEA activities
- Review tooling and supplier DFM reports
- Support engineering change processes (ECN) and update drawings accordingly
- Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Contribute to continuous improvement of existing product designs
- Assist with the design of jigs, fixtures and test equipment
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer, ideally at a senior level
- Strong SolidWorks experience
- Excellent understanding of the full product design lifecycle
- Experience producing high-quality manufacturing drawings
- Ability to manage projects and workloads effectively
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
Desirable:
- Experience with plastic product design, including injection moulding
- Knowledge of sheet metal and fabrication processes
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or similar
- Experience working with external manufacturing partners
