We are working with an established engineering and technology-led manufacturing business based in Aberystwyth that is continuing to expand its R&D capability. As part of this growth, they are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their development team and support both new and existing products.
This role would suit an enthusiastic and adaptable mechanical design engineer who enjoys seeing designs through the full lifecycle, from early concept and prototyping through to manufacturing handover.
The Role
- You will work as part of a multidisciplinary R&D team and be responsible for the mechanical design, prototyping and testing of components and assemblies.
- The role involves translating research concepts into robust, manufacturable products, working closely with suppliers and internal engineering teams to ensure designs meet performance, quality and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design new products using SolidWorks, producing 3D CAD models and 2D drawings.
- Provide ongoing design support for the existing product range.
- Work cross-functionally to take products from concept through to manufacturing handover.
- Prototype, test and validate mechanical designs.
- Support the design of jigs and fixtures for assembly, calibration and testing in manufacturing.
- Apply a range of prototyping techniques, including additive and subtractive processes.
- Identify suitable materials and work with suppliers to source components.
- Produce and contribute to technical documentation including design specifications, build files, test procedures and user documentation.
- Design with compliance in mind from the outset (e.g. CE, EMC, LVD).
- Work within an ISO 9001 quality environment.
- Provide technical support to internal teams when required.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Experience using SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of prototyping techniques including additive and subtractive manufacturing.
- Hands-on ability to build and test prototypes and parts.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes, with willingness to learn new materials and methods.
- Ability to work across multiple projects and product areas.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to turn concepts into practical designs.
- Clear communicator, comfortable working collaboratively across departments.
- Motivated, enthusiastic and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Desirable:
- Experience using SolidWorks PDM for document control.
- Knowledge of plastic manufacturing processes such as injection moulding.
- Experience or exposure to optical components.
- Data analysis skills to support design validation.
- Familiarity with regulated or technically demanding product environments.
- Experience designing enclosures with consideration for RF emissions.
