A highly specialised engineering company is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead its technical activities during an exciting period of growth and a very full order book!
This is a small 8-person business, so your role will be VERY broad. Most of your role will be to provide technical leadership and oversight across engineering projects. But you will be required to be ‘hands-on’ at times in mechanical design, either because the project needs it or to cover people's work while they’re on holiday etc. You will also need to be customer-facing and able to talk to clients. You will engage with new and existing clients to help win new business or ensure projects are delivered.
This role would suit an experienced Engineering Manager who is still hands-on (or capable of being) or a highly experienced Senior/Principal/Lead Mechanical Engineer, looking to take the step up into a leadership role.
You must have a strong technical background in mechanical design involving precision hydraulics/pneumatics. Any experience in robotics/automation or similar would be highly beneficial, but not essential.
The business designs and builds complex bespoke engineering systems for high-profile clients, combining mechanical design, electronics, software and advanced engineering techniques. Reporting directly to the Board, you will take responsibility for the technical leadership and operational delivery. This role requires a hands-on engineering leader who is equally comfortable solving technical challenges, managing a small engineering team, and supporting business development activity.
You will play a key role in shaping the future direction of the business, ensuring projects are delivered successfully while also identifying opportunities to secure new work.
Key Responsibilities:- Work closely with the Board to develop and execute the company’s long-term business strategy.
- Provide technical leadership and oversight across engineering projects.
- Support the engineering team in solving complex mechanical and systems design challenges.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with long-standing international customers.
- Lead business development activities, including preparing quotations and proposals.
- Manage and support a small team of engineers and technical staff.
- Participate in design reviews, ensuring high engineering standards and practical solutions.
- Proven experience in a senior engineering leadership role combining technical and commercial responsibilities.
- Strong mechanical design and practical engineering skills.
- Ability to manage projects and teams in a hands-on engineering environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage customers, suppliers and internal teams.
- Comfortable working in a small, agile engineering business.
- Experience with CAD tools (Autodesk Inventor desirable).
- Strong technical background in pneumatics, hydraulics or robotics.
Candidates must have the right to work in the UK. The successful candidate will need to meet the requirements for working on defence-related projects.
