Job Overview
As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will design how users interact with digital services—defining flows, behaviours, and interface patterns that enable intuitive, accessible experiences. Working as part of multidisciplinary teams, you will translate user needs and service requirements into clear interaction models, ensuring that services are usable, consistent, and aligned with modern design standards. You will play a key role in bridging design and engineering—ensuring that interactions are not only well designed, but also technically feasible and implemented to a high standard.
Responsibilities
- Design detailed interaction patterns, user flows, and interface behaviours for complex digital services
- Create high‑fidelity prototypes to communicate interaction logic, validate design decisions, and support delivery
- Define micro‑interactions, system states, validation patterns, and edge cases to ensure robust user experiences
- Apply and extend design systems, including the GOV.UK Design System, contributing reusable components and patterns
- Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure designs are implemented accurately and meet accessibility and performance requirements
- Ensure all designs meet WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards and responsive design principles
- Work closely with user researchers and UX designers to iterate interactions based on evidence and feedback
- Contribute to end‑to‑end service design, ensuring interactions align across journeys and touchpoints
- Maintain consistency across products through contribution to shared component libraries and design standards
- Document interaction specifications clearly to support development and handover
Qualifications
- Eligibility for Security Certificate (SC) Clearance, meaning 5 years continuous UK residency
- Strong experience designing interactions for complex digital products and services in Agile environments
- Expertise in creating high‑fidelity prototypes and interaction models using tools such as Figma (including components and variants)
- Proven ability to design scalable, reusable patterns within design systems
- Experience working with, or alongside, the GOV.UK Design System or similar established design systems
- Strong understanding of interaction design principles, including usability, feedback, and system behaviour
- Familiarity with modern front‑end approaches, including component‑based development and JavaScript frameworks
- Strong knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and practical application in interface design
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, particularly with developers and researchers
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain and justify interaction design decisions to a range of stakeholders
