Job Overview
We are recruiting a SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive independent special school in Burnley, working with pupils aged 7-16 (with some provision up to 19) who have autism and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school provides a structured, nurturing environment where pupils benefit from personalised learning, strong staff relationships, and a focus on emotional wellbeing. Staff work collaboratively to create a calm, safe, and engaging setting that enables every young person to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism and SEMH needs
- Support access to learning through differentiated, sensory-informed strategies
- Promote emotional regulation, resilience, and positive behaviour
- Work towards EHCP targets alongside teachers and the wider support team
- Help maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
- Monitor, record, and report on pupil progress and behaviour
- Support personal care and behavioural needs where required
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people with SEN, particularly autism and/or SEMH (essential)
- Calm, patient, and empathetic approach
- Ability to build strong, positive relationships
- Strong teamwork skills
- Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification (desirable)
- Willingness to support personal care needs
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)
