Overview
We are seeking an experienced AWS Cloud Engineer to support the delivery of a greenfield cloud platform build within a major UK public sector programme. This is an immediate requirement to support a project currently behind schedule, requiring a hands-on engineer who can contribute from day one and accelerate delivery. Working within a small, high-performing team (including architects and delivery leadership), you will play a key role in designing and building a secure, scalable AWS platform from scratch, not a migration or BAU environment. This is a long-term programme with strong potential for extension beyond the initial contract term.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build AWS infrastructure from the ground up within a greenfield environment
- Translate architecture into hands-on implementation across the full delivery lifecycle
- Develop and manage infrastructure using Terraform (primary) and CloudFormation
- Configure and deploy multi-account AWS environments (landing zone approach)
- Implement IAM, networking (VPCs, routing, security), and core AWS services
- Deploy and manage applications within distributed, multi-tier AWS environments
- Support build, testing, deployment, and optimisation of cloud infrastructure
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and stakeholders in a consultancy-led delivery model
- Identify and resolve technical challenges, contributing to platform stability and performance
Essential Experience
- AWS Cloud / Platform Engineering
- Proven experience building AWS platforms from scratch (greenfield environments)
- Strong knowledge of core AWS services (e.g. EC2, S3, IAM, VPC)
- Experience designing multi-account environments using AWS best practices
- Strong understanding of cloud security, IAM, and networking architecture
Infrastructure as Code / Engineering
- Strong hands-on Terraform experience (end-to-end platform builds)
- Experience working with CloudFormation for infrastructure provisioning
- Experience writing infrastructure code (YAML, JSON, HCL)
- Scripting experience (e.g. Python, Bash or similar)
Delivery & Environment
- Experience working across the full delivery lifecycle (design, build, test, deploy, support)
- Experience in fast-paced, delivery-focused or recovery project environments
- Active SC Clearance (essential) with recent use
Desirable Experience
- Experience working within consultancy-led or client-facing delivery environments
- Exposure to CI/CD tooling (e.g. Jenkins, Git, Ansible)
- Experience with serverless technologies (e.g. Lambda, API Gateway)
- Experience configuring AWS networking and distributed systems at scale
- Exposure to performance tuning, monitoring, and high-availability infrastructure
Nice to Have
- AWS certifications (Associate or Professional level)
- Experience contributing to architectural reviews or remediation workstreams
- Experience working with databases in AWS environments
- Broad technical background across infrastructure, networking, or software engineering
- Strong stakeholder communication skills in client-facing environments
Interview Process
- Immediate shortlisting underway
