About Us

In 1901, Henry Ford designed and built the race car called “Sweepstakes.” On October 10th of that year, he drove Sweepstakes against Alexander Winton, a famous racer and builder. Against all odds Ford won. That was the beginning – “the race that changed the world” – and it continues to this day. From our victories at Le Mans in 1966 and exactly fifty years later in 2016, to multiple World Championships, the spirit of Henry Ford lives with us every day through our motorsport efforts around the world.

About the Role

This is a career-defining opportunity to take a pivotal role in one of the most competitive and prestigious racing series in the world. The Strategy Engineer plays a critical role in determining the outcome of each race, developing robust, data-driven strategies and making rapid tactical calls during live events. Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success as a Strategy Engineer at the top level of motorsport, combining technical expertise, sharp decision-making, and clear communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-Race Strategy Planning: Develop comprehensive race strategies based on simulation modelling, historical data, and track analysis. Analyse potential scenarios, including tyre degradation, fuel usage, and weather conditions, to prepare for every possible outcome. Create clear strategic plans for the team and drivers, outlining optimal approaches for qualifying and race day. Work with the Performance Engineer to integrate performance modelling into strategy preparation.
  • Live Race Strategy & Tactical Decision-Making: Monitor live timing, telemetry, and competitor actions to adapt strategy in real-time during races. Provide calm, decisive recommendations to the Race Engineer for pit stops, tyre changes, and tactical moves. Anticipate competitor actions and plan counter strategies to gain a competitive advantage. Manage complex, evolving situations such as safety cars, weather changes, and on-track incidents. Ensure every tactical decision complies with FIA sporting regulations and team policies.
  • Competitor Analysis: Lead competitor research, tracking rivals’ performance, tendencies, and strategies throughout the season. Use data tools and timing systems to predict competitor behaviour during qualifying and races. Produce reports that highlight opportunities to exploit weaknesses or capitalise on strategic openings.
  • Collaboration & Alignment: Work closely with the Race Engineer to align strategy with engineering realities and live trackside decisions. Share modelling outputs with the Performance Engineer to ensure strategy reflects current car performance levels. Collaborate with the Race Engineer and Chief Mechanic to plan pit stops and assess repair implications during live events. Communicate clearly with management and drivers to keep all stakeholders informed of strategy direction.
  • Post-Event Review & Continuous Improvement: Lead post-race reviews to evaluate strategy effectiveness and outcomes. Capture learnings from each event to refine future strategy models and processes. Work with the design and performance teams to integrate race learnings into long-term development plans. Continuously enhance simulation tools, predictive models, and analysis processes to improve accuracy and speed.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance: Ensure all strategy decisions and processes comply with FIA sporting regulations and internal company policies. Promote professionalism, integrity, and safety in all decision-making and team communications.

Qualifications, Skills & Personal Attributes

  • Essential: Proven experience as a Strategy Engineer or equivalent role within a top-tier motorsport environment (e.g., WEC, Formula 1, Formula E, Le Mans). Strong technical knowledge of race strategy, timing systems, and simulation modelling. Proven ability to make calm, rapid decisions under pressure during live race conditions. Excellent analytical skills with proficiency in relevant software tools. Strong communication skills to clearly present strategies to drivers and team members. Willingness to travel extensively, including internationally, for tests and race events.
  • Desirable: Experience in endurance racing programs and the unique demands of multi-driver, long-duration events. Knowledge of hybrid and advanced powertrain technologies. Familiarity with FIA regulations and technical compliance processes. Background in competitor analysis and predictive modelling.

Personal Attributes

  • Strategic thinker with a calm, clear-headed approach under pressure.
  • Highly analytical, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proactive problem solver who anticipates challenges before they arise.
