Are you looking for an opportunity to gain some work experience? Would you like to see what it’s like to try out different jobs? We know it can sometimes be hard to find a job and volunteering isn’t always practical or affordable, so Brave Island is really excited to have teamed up with a range of different organisations to offer a number of paid placements. The Nature Reserves Placement is a six month opportunity hosted by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. We’re looking for a young person who loves the outdoors and is interested in conservation.

The placement holder will help the Trust with the management of their nature reserves, which are the areas of land they look after, in various locations across the Isle of Wight.

Here’s a little bit more about what the role involves:

  • Working alongside a team of staff and volunteers to support the management of the Trust’s nature reserves.
  • Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and across various locations on the Isle of Wight.
  • Helping with a number of tasks required to manage reserves such as winter scrub clearance, fencing, hay making, and balsam bashing.
  • Learning new skills for land management and conservation.

  • Help to conserve landscapes and habitats.
  • Connect with new people and be part of an enthusiastic, varied team.
  • Spend time in the outdoors and be physically active.
  • Enjoy new experiences and learn something new.
  • Have the opportunity to expand your training into specific areas of interest, eg tool maintenance, fire management etc.
  • Gain experience of working within a charity, being involved with the Trust and meeting new people.

This role will suit you if you:

  • Enjoy spending time outdoors and are happy working in various weather conditions.
  • Enjoy meeting new and different people and working as part of a team.
  • Would like to learn more about land management and conservation.
  • Have good physical health and spatial coordination to be able to carry out the role safely.
  • Enjoy learning new skills and gathering knowledge.

Practical info: This placement is open to those aged 18-25 at the start of the placement. It is one day per week for 6 months, and paid at a rate of £100/day. This placement is based at various Hampshire and Isle of Wight Trust nature reserves across the Island, you will be meeting at Wilder Little Duxmore each day, and need to be able to make your own way there.
