Vent Engineering are a specialist in natural and smoke ventilation systems and have been manufacturing, supplying, installing, and commissioning ventilation systems since 1988.

About The Role:

We are looking for a Smoke Design Engineer with experience in smoke control system design and a strong desire to develop into a Fire Engineer in the medium term. This role offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your expertise in fire safety, mechanical ventilation, and compliance while working in a dynamic, project-driven environment.

As part of our Technical Department, you will be involved in the design and compliance aspects of smoke ventilation systems, ensuring alignment with UK fire safety regulations and industry standards. You will work closely with Business Development Managers (BDMs), estimators, and project teams to deliver innovative, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Technical Development:
  • Produce and review technical designs for smoke control systems, ensuring compliance with BS 9991, BS 9999, BS 7346, EN 12101, and Building Regulations.
  • Design mechanical smoke shaft and ductwork systems, including fan selection and pressure drop calculations.
  • Develop control logic tables (cause and effect) and review Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) reports.
  • Review and approve CAD drawings prepared by the design team.
  • Provide technical guidance to BDMs and estimators on product selection and system requirements.
  • Estimation & Compliance:
    • Assist in preparing quotations, ensuring alignment with Fire Strategies and Technical Specifications.
    • Ensure all quotations meet UK fire safety regulations and company quality procedures.
    • Identify technical non-compliance issues and suggest solutions.
  • Collaboration & Mentoring:
    • Engage with installation teams to ensure design integrity is maintained.
    • Maintain detailed documentation for design, compliance, and project reference.
    • Mentor junior team members on technical best practices and troubleshooting.
  • Project & Quality Control:
    • Support the integration of new orders, ensuring technical accuracy.
    • Ensure records and documentation follow Design Office and Quality Management procedures.
    • Participate in internal technical discussions, offering input on feasibility and fire safety compliance.

    • Technical expertise in smoke control, mechanical design, or fire safety systems.

    • Experience designing or estimating smoke ventilation systems.
    • Knowledge of UK building regulations & industry standards (BS 9991, BS 9999, BS 7346, EN 12101, Approved Documents).
    • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD preferred).
    • Ability to interpret CFD reports, cause & effect tables, and fire strategies.
    • Strong problem-solving and communication skills to liaise with multiple stakeholders.
    • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
