Role Details

Position: Locum Housing Litigation Lawyer
Working Arrangement: Full Time, 35 hours per week, with office attendance twice per week
Duration: Initial interim contract, with potential for extension
Rate: £50 - £55 per hour Umbrella

Duties may include

  • Conducting litigation across a range of housing and general litigation matters
  • Managing cases involving rent recovery, possession proceedings, service charge recovery and housing benefit appeals
  • Issuing claims and reviewing applications, pleadings and other court or tribunal documentation
  • Managing a busy caseload and ensuring statutory and court deadlines are met
  • Reviewing and authorising legal documentation prepared by officers
  • Providing legal advice on complex litigation, procedural and evidential matters
  • Representing the authority in courts and tribunals where appropriate
  • Advising on legal, financial and reputational risk arising from contentious matters
  • Working closely with officers across a number of service areas
  • Supporting colleagues with interpretation of legislation, procedure and litigation strategy

Candidate Requirements

  • UK Solicitor registered with the SRA, Barrister registered with the BSB and authorised to conduct litigation, or CILEX Lawyer specifically authorised to conduct litigation
  • Strong previous general litigation experience
  • Experience handling complex litigation across courts and tribunals
  • Previous Local Authority or similar public sector experience
  • Good knowledge of court rules, procedure and litigation practice
  • Experience of housing litigation, including rent, possession or service charge matters
  • Housing Benefit appeals experience would be advantageous
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good stakeholder management and ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams
  • Experience using legal case management systems and Microsoft Office
  • Strong understanding of professional standards, confidentiality and conflicts of interest
