If you're an experienced Childcare Solicitor looking for a role where you can handle your own advocacy, work on complex and meaningful cases, and enjoy genuine flexibility, this could be an excellent opportunity.

We're working exclusively with a well-established West Midlands local authority that is looking to appoint a Childcare Solicitor to join its highly regarded in-house legal team.

This is a permanent opportunity within a friendly, supportive and high-performing team that has built an excellent reputation across the organisation.

You'll join a service with strong leadership, well-established processes and experienced legal support, allowing you to focus on delivering high quality legal advice and advocacy while continuing to develop your own career.

The Role

You'll advise Children's Services on a broad range of public law childcare matters, managing your own varied caseload from instruction through to conclusion.

Advocacy forms a significant part of the role, with the expectation that you'll undertake the majority of your own hearings, while more complex matters are supported by experienced in-house Counsel.

The work is interesting, challenging and genuinely rewarding.

You'll have the opportunity to make a real difference while working alongside experienced colleagues who value collaboration, knowledge sharing and professional development.

About You

Applications are welcomed from qualified Solicitors, Barristers or Chartered Legal Executives with around three years' PQE or equivalent experience.

However, the organisation is flexible and would be keen to hear from exceptional candidates with significant pre-qualification experience or those who can demonstrate the necessary level of expertise.

Previous local government experience is not essential.

The team has successfully recruited lawyers from private practice and welcomes applications from candidates looking to make the move in-house.

You’ll be someone who

  • Has experience of public law childcare work.
  • Is confident undertaking advocacy and representing clients in court.
  • Can manage a busy caseload with minimal supervision.
  • Enjoys building strong working relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Wants to be part of a collaborative, supportive legal team.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to join one of the region's most respected in-house legal teams, offering the quality of work often associated with private practice, without the pressures that typically come with it.

Alongside a varied and stimulating caseload, you'll benefit from

  • Hybrid working, with only one mandatory office day each month.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including part-time (four days per week) and compressed hours (nine-day fortnight).
  • The opportunity to conduct your own advocacy and see cases through from start to finish.
  • A genuinely supportive and welcoming team culture.
  • Excellent career development within a large, award-winning legal service.
  • Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Generous annual leave and comprehensive employee benefits package.

Whether you're already working in local government or you're a private practice lawyer looking for a better work-life balance without compromising on the quality of your work, this represents an outstanding opportunity to build a long-term career within a progressive and ambitious legal team.
