Interim Senior Building Control Surveyor/Inspector
Based in London, hybrid working
Length: 6 months with possible extension
IR35 status: Inside
We are seeking an interim senior professional to join the Building Control team of a London Borough, delivering an impartial, independent and accountable service that ensures compliance with the Building Regulations, Building Act 1984 and the Building Safety Act 2022.
Key Responsibilities of the Senior Building Control Surveyor/Inspector:
- Lead on complex and high-risk building control projects from inception to completion
- Ensure compliance with statutory Building Regulations and associated legislation
- Operate as a licensed inspector for complex buildings under the Building Safety Act 2022
- Contribute to building safety, carbon reduction and accessibility improvements across the borough
- Undertake inspections, assess technical submissions and agree compliant solutions
- Initiate enforcement action where necessary, including preparing evidence and attending court
- Play a key role in responding to Dangerous Structures, participating in a 24/7 emergency rota and making critical on-site decisions affecting life safety
- Liaise with the Building Safety Regulator, Fire Service, emergency services and other agencies to ensure robust scrutiny of structural and fire safety matters
- Support safety of sports grounds work within a multi-disciplinary team
- Manage and develop staff, mentor junior surveyors, oversee workloads and budgets, and contribute to service planning, innovation and performance improvement
Skills, experience and knowledge of the Senior Building Control Surveyor/Inspector:
- Valid Class 3 Registered Building Inspector status (BSR)
- Degree accredited by RICS, ICE or IStructE (or equivalent)
- Corporate membership of RICS, ICE or IStructE (or equivalent)
- LABC Level 6 (General Surveyor) or equivalent
- Extensive experience in senior building control roles handling complex projects
- In-depth knowledge of the Building Act 1984, Building Regulations, Building Safety Act 2022 and associated legislation
- Strong expertise in structural and fire safety compliance
