An experienced Interim Consultant in Public Health is required to provide senior leadership across statutory public health functions during a period of service demand and change. This role will support delivery of core public health responsibilities, provide expert system leadership, and work closely with the Director of Public Health and partners to improve population health and reduce inequalities.

The Role

  • Providing senior public health leadership to deliver statutory duties across health improvement, health protection and health and care public health.
  • Working at pace with partners across local government, the NHS, UKHSA and VCSE organisations to deliver evidence-based interventions.
  • Leading strategy development, commissioning support and service improvement using public health intelligence and evaluation.
  • Supporting preparedness and response to health protection and major incidents, including participation in the in-hours consultant rota.
  • Deputising for the Director of Public Health as required and contributing to senior leadership and corporate decision-making.
  • Providing expert advice to elected members, senior officers and system partners on complex public health issues.
  • Managing resources and contributing to financial oversight, commissioning and procurement activity.
  • Providing leadership, supervision and professional support to senior public health staff.

Requirements

  • Full specialist registration with the GMC, GDC or UK Public Health Register, or eligibility for registration within six months.
  • Extensive experience operating at consultant level within public health.
  • Strong system leadership skills and experience working across organisational boundaries.
  • Excellent analytical, advisory and communication skills, with the ability to influence at senior and political levels.
  • Ability to manage complex priorities, high-profile issues and tight timescales.
  • Strong commitment to tackling health inequalities and improving population outcomes.
