A large local authority is seeking an experienced Head of Estates and Facilities to join its senior leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded property professional to take strategic responsibility for a substantial and diverse property portfolio valued at over Β£100m, driving asset performance, income generation, regeneration, and service improvement across the organisation.
The Role
As Head of Estates and Facilities, you will act as the organisation's lead property professional, providing strategic leadership across estates, commercial property, facilities management, maintenance, capital investment, compliance, and asset management functions. You will lead a multidisciplinary property team and play a key role in ensuring the estate supports both operational service delivery and long-term corporate objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategic management and optimisation of a large and diverse property portfolio.
- Develop and deliver asset management strategies and estate plans.
- Oversee commercial property activities, including lettings, lease renewals, rent reviews, acquisitions, and disposals.
- Manage facilities management and property maintenance services across the operational estate.
- Lead capital investment planning, valuations, and property-related business cases.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant property, governance, and regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities for income generation, regeneration, and service transformation.
- Provide strategic property advice to senior officers, elected members, and key stakeholders.
- Lead, develop, and inspire a multidisciplinary estates and facilities team.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- MRICS qualification with significant post-qualification experience.
- Extensive experience managing complex property portfolios and asset management programmes.
- Strong knowledge of landlord and tenant matters, acquisitions, disposals, and strategic estate planning.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary property, estates, or facilities teams.
- A proven track record of delivering income growth, efficiency savings, and service improvements.
- Experience developing capital programmes, business cases, and asset strategies.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to operate confidently within a politically sensitive environment.
Desirable
- Experience within Local Government or a similar public sector environment.
- Experience leading regeneration, investment, or estate transformation projects.
- Knowledge of public sector governance and decision-making processes.
- Experience managing large commercial and operational property portfolios.
