Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to take full ownership of our payroll function.
This is a fully remote, full‑time, autonomous role responsible for the end‑to‑end delivery of client payrolls.
You will be the primary point of contact for payroll queries and play a key role in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and a high‑quality client experience.
Location: Remote (UK‑based). Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm. Salary: £35,000 – £42,000 (DOE).
Key Responsibilities
- End‑to‑end processing of weekly and monthly UK payrolls
- Managing PAYE schemes and payroll calculations
- Handling statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP, etc.)
- Managing pensions and auto‑enrolment compliance
- Submitting RTI (FPS / EPS) filings accurately and on time
- Reviewing payroll outputs and payslips before release
- Managing payroll year‑end processes (P60s, P11Ds where applicable)
- Ensuring ongoing compliance with HMRC and UK payroll legislation
- Client & Practice Support
- Act as the main point of contact for payroll clients
- Respond to payroll queries from clients and internal teams
- Liaise with HMRC, pension providers, and other third parties
- Support the onboarding of new payroll clients
- Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation
- Wider Business Support
• Support other areas of the practice during busy periods, including
- Basic bookkeeping
- VAT or administrative assistance
- Process improvements and internal documentation
- Ad‑hoc projects
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience managing UK payroll end‑to‑end
- Strong knowledge of PAYE, RTI, and auto‑enrolment
- Experience using payroll software (Bright Pay, Xero Payroll, Sage, or similar)
- High attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
- Confident communicator, comfortable dealing directly with clients
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a remote environment
Desirable
- Experience within an accountancy practice or payroll bureau
- Exposure to bookkeeping or VAT
- Familiarity with Xero and cloud‑based accounting systems
