Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the Sizewell C (SZC) Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and when completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

This is a long term contract role which can be based in either the London or Bristol offices (hybrid working).

Integrated in the site building team within the Technical Directorate (TD), the role consists of overseeing and managing the design of the SZC2203 and the SZC2205 contract buildings:

  • HUA – Main Access Control Building
  • HZC – Chemical Products Storage
  • HZG – Oil and Grease Storage
  • HUB – Outage Access Control Building

The primary role of the Buildings Design Manager will be to manage the delivery of design of the SZC2203/SZC2205 contract buildings scope, to time, quality, safety and scope, and will be accountable for assuming the technical management and day-to-day management of the scope, planning of the scope and proposing risk mitigation measures.

The purpose of the role is to manage the design of these contract buildings from basic design to detailed design, with the support of an external designer and SZC2203/2205 project team including building leads, mechanical lead, electrical lead, CDM Advisor, Nuclear Safety Lead and Architect.

Reporting in the DDM Site Buildings Team Manager, the Buildings Design Manager is part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team and is a representative of the SZC Design Delivery Management team. The Buildings Design Manager is the principal point of contact for the SZ2203/2205 contract within the design delivery management team. The post holder shall act as Responsible Designer for this contract.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the development of SZ2203/2205 engineering design delivery strategies, ensuring effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Managing the authoring Scope of Works documentation for Contract Partner(s).
  • Managing the preparation and development of the Technical Specifications for the design studies.
  • Coordinating the technical assessment of contracts prior to signature of contract.
  • Providing technical management of the Contract(s), including being the primary point of contact for the civil programme project managers.
  • Coordinating engineering design activities performed by the different Contract Partners in parallel work streams.
  • Providing technical support and information to the Contract Partner(s) where required.
  • Managing the surveillance of the Contract Partner(s) detailed design work, in conjunction with SZC’s technical management, in accordance with project processes.
  • Ensuring consistency of Contract Partner(s) deliverables with the contract technical specifications and ensuring Safety and UK Context requirements are taken into account in design activities.
  • Ensuring effective configuration control processes are in place and are implemented.
  • Managing the resolution of transverse (multi-programme) engineering issues or risks.
  • Ensuring that the Contract Partner(s) List of Deliverables (LoD) are consistent with the agreed schedule(s) and to ensure the Contract Partner is delivering design output in accordance with the agreed schedule and the LoD.
  • Agree and accept the Contract Partner Design Schedule on behalf of SZC.
  • Provide and coordinate engineering design gateway requirements and reviews.
  • Coordinate Constructability Reviews prior to the Readiness Review and formal transfer to the Joint Delivery Office (JDO) team.
  • Facilitate optimisation of the design via modifications, trends and changes from feedback across the project.
  • Lead discussions with the Contract Partner, providing support to the SZC Project manager with early warning and compensation events, reviewing project change requests and provide support to the commercial lead for cost and schedule impact assessment and negotiation.
  • Ensure perceived risks and trends are recorded and appropriately managed.
  • Liaise with the SZC Project Manager for any variation of scope out of delegation provided by the SZC Project Manager.
  • Establish and provide regular updates to the contract risk register.

The Buildings Design Manager will be supported by SZC specialists for the technical disciplines and particular UK Context issues.

Requirements:

  • Experienced in managing the design to meet nuclear safety and/or security requirements.
  • Experience of designing facilities to withstand internal and external hazards and to meet security operational requirements.
  • Experience in design management and coordination on large multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry appreciated.
  • Awareness of the nuclear safety related constraints.
  • Solid Technical knowledge of building design and construction.
  • Strong IT skills and proficiency in engineering software packages.
  • Project lifecycle experience including design, qualification, manufacturing, construction, commissioning or site-based operations.
  • Knowledge/experience of design activities related to the Conventional industry (RIBA, BSRIA).
  • Previous demonstrable project management experience.
  • Degree qualified or equivalent in civil/structural/architect/process/mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Good knowledge of UK Nuclear Regulations and legislation.
  • A basic understanding of EPR design and the nuclear fuel cycle is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of UK Building Regulations.
