We are seeking an experienced CNC Setter / Operator / Programmer to join an established and growing heavy engineering business. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled machinist who is confident working with large, complex components and has strong experience programming, setting and operating CNC machinery.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in Siemens-controlled CNC machining, ideally with Siemens 840D, and will be comfortable working predominantly on large horizontal boring and milling machines.
This is a varied workshop environment, offering the opportunity to work on one-off components, repair work, specialist machining and large-scale engineering projects rather than repetitive production work.
The Role
As a CNC Setter / Operator / Programmer, you will be responsible for taking machining jobs from drawing through to finished component. You will be expected to confidently programme, set and operate CNC machinery, selecting the appropriate tooling, workholding and machining methods to achieve the required standards.
The role will be heavily focused on horizontal boring and milling, making this an excellent opportunity for an experienced CNC miller looking to develop further within heavy engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Programming CNC machinery using Siemens 840D controls
- Setting and operating CNC horizontal boring and milling machines
- Producing large and complex components from engineering drawings
- Programming machines from drawings, specifications and customer requirements
- Selecting appropriate cutting tools, workholding and machining strategies
- Setting tools, offsets and work coordinates accurately
- Carrying out first-off inspections and in-process checks
- Measuring components using a range of precision inspection equipment
- Working with a variety of materials and component sizes
- Machining one-off and low-volume components to tight tolerances
- Working from engineering drawings, tolerances and technical specifications
- Troubleshooting machining, tooling and programme issues
- Making programme adjustments and optimising machining cycles where required
- Supporting other CNC machining operations across the workshop
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment
- Working safely and confidently around large machinery, heavy components and lifting equipment
About You
We are looking for an experienced machinist who can demonstrate genuine programming, setting and operating experience rather than simply machine operation.
Ideally, you will have a strong background in CNC milling or horizontal boring, with experience working on large components within a heavy engineering, manufacturing, fabrication or specialist machining environment.
Essential / Desirable Experience
- Proven experience as a CNC Setter / Operator / Programmer
- Experience programming CNC machines
- Experience with Siemens controls, ideally Siemens 840D
- Experience setting and operating CNC machinery
- Ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings
- Good understanding of cutting tools, speeds, feeds and machining techniques
- Experience machining large or complex components
- Ability to accurately measure and inspect finished components
- Strong understanding of machining tolerances and engineering specifications
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make programme/tooling adjustments
- A safety-conscious approach to working around large machinery
