At Velstar, we build high-performing Shopify stores and applications for ambitious eCommerce brands. We’re looking for a Shopify Developer to help deliver robust, scalable solutions that combine great frontend experiences with solid system-level thinking.
This is primarily a frontend-focused role, but we’re after someone who’s comfortable bridging the gap between storefront and system, supporting Shopify apps and collaborating closely with our back-end team when needed.
As a Shopify Developer, you’ll play a key part in developing and customising Shopify stores that meet real commercial needs. You’ll work closely with designers, project managers and other developers to deliver high-quality work, while maintaining strong coding standards and a problem-solving mindset.
Alongside theme development, you’ll support our back-end team using PHP and Laravel to help maintain and extend Shopify apps across new and existing projects.
What you’ll be doing:
- Developing and customising Shopify themes using Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Building new features and functionality to improve UX, performance and conversion
- Integrating third‑party APIs and services to extend store capabilities
- Testing across devices and browsers, optimising for performance, SEO and reliability
- Supporting Shopify app development using PHP and Laravel
- Collaborating closely with designers and project managers to deliver work on time and to spec
- Participating in code reviews to maintain high quality and share knowledge
- Diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues with scalable, maintainable solutions
- Estimating tasks accurately and contributing to sprint planning and delivery
What we’re looking for:
You’re a capable Shopify developer who takes pride in clean code and enjoys solving problems. You’re comfortable owning tasks independently, but value collaboration and clear communication.
You’ll likely have:
- 2–3 years’ professional experience working with Shopify
- Strong proficiency in Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Practical experience supporting back‑end work using PHP and Laravel
- Experience working with Shopify APIs and custom integrations
- A solid understanding of responsive design and cross‑device compatibility
- Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum, Kanban, etc.)
- Familiarity with project management tools such as Jira, Trello or Asana
- Confidence using Git and collaborative version control workflows
Nice to have:
- Experience with Shopify Hydrogen / Oxygen or headless commerce
- Knowledge of modern React frameworks such as Remix or Next.js
- Experience with Theme App Extensions
- Strong understanding of performance optimisation and Core Web Vitals
- Experience improving PageSpeed Insights scores
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments
Why Velstar?
- Hybrid working (minimum 3 days per week in our Liverpool or Leeds office)
- The chance to work on complex Shopify builds for ambitious brands
- A collaborative development team with strong technical standards
- Clear progression opportunities as you grow your skills and impact
- An environment that values quality, curiosity and continuous learning
If you’re a Shopify Developer who enjoys building things properly, and wants to keep growing in a fast‑moving eCommerce environment, we’d love to hear from you.
