The role

Velocity is looking for an experienced civil engineer to join our growing Infrastructure team in London at Senior or Principal Engineer level.

This is a hands-on technical role for someone with strong experience in development infrastructure and highway and drainage design, with the opportunity to take increasing responsibility for project management, clients and commercial delivery.

You will work across a varied portfolio of development infrastructure projects from inception through detailed design and technical approval. Depending on experience, you will either take a leading technical role on projects or, at Principal Engineer level, manage and deliver small to medium sized commissions while supporting the delivery of larger projects.

We offer hybrid working, with an expectation that employees are based in our London office for at least three days each week, providing a balance between flexibility and the collaboration, mentoring and knowledge-sharing that comes from working together.

The position can be appointed at either Senior Engineer or Principal Engineer level, depending on your experience, technical capability and current level of project responsibility.

Responsibilities

You will contribute to the design and delivery of highway, drainage and associated infrastructure projects, working closely with clients, co-professionals and other members of the Velocity team.

· Designing and delivering highways and development infrastructure, including Section 278 works and associated highway improvements.

· Preparing highway vertical alignments, pavement designs, swept path assessments, calculations and design drawings in accordance with relevant standards.

· Preparing drainage strategies and detailed drainage designs, with an understanding of flood risk assessment requirements.

· Reviewing utilities constraints and preparing information for the Statutory Undertakers diversion estimate process.

· Preparing technical reports, notes and other submissions, and contributing to Road Safety Audit design responses.

· Liaising with clients, external co-professionals, approving authorities and internal colleagues to provide clear and robust technical advice.

· Preparing fee proposals and tender documents and supporting the development of client and co-professional relationships.

· Planning and managing your own workload effectively and delivering high-quality work within project deadlines.

· Ensuring relevant health, safety and wellbeing requirements are followed on projects.

· Maintaining your professional development and progressing towards professional qualification.

At Principal Engineer level, the role will also include responsibility for managing projects through the full project lifecycle, coordinating and delegating work, controlling project time and fees, timely billing and taking personal responsibility for the profitability of designated projects.

About you

We are looking for someone with strong technical capability and experience in a consultancy development planning or infrastructure environment.

You are likely to have:

· A BEng, MEng or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.

· Previous experience in an engineering and/or transport planning consultancy working on development-related infrastructure.

· Detailed knowledge of highway design, including vertical alignment, pavement design and relevant national design guidance and standards.

· Experience of drainage strategies and design, flood risk considerations and utilities constraints.

· Good knowledge of the national, regional and local planning policy framework relevant to development infrastructure.

· Competent skills in relevant design software, with a high level of technical proficiency expected at Principal Engineer level.

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to analyse complex information and prepare robust technical recommendations.

· A proactive approach and a willingness to take responsibility for delivering high-quality work.

· Working towards Chartered or Incorporated status with a relevant professional institution.

For a Principal Engineer appointment, we would expect someone already operating at Senior or Principal level who can independently manage small to medium sized projects, delegate effectively, manage project profitability and contribute to developing client relationships and new opportunities.

For a Senior Engineer appointment, we would expect someone operating at Engineer or Senior Engineer level who is ready to take greater technical responsibility, provide robust advice and support the successful delivery of projects.
