The postholder will be a Clinical Scientist within Medical Physics, responsible for providing scientific, technical, and professional expertise to support the safe commissioning, implementation, and ongoing clinical use of Elekta ProKnow across radiotherapy services in Wales. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the role will contribute to a national programme to standardise radiotherapy data management through a cloud‑based platform designed to improve quality, safety, and service consistency. The postholder will contribute to the continuous improvement of radiotherapy services in Wales by enabling consistent practice, supporting national audit, and promoting evidence‑based use of ProKnow to enhance patient care and treatment quality. This is a fixed‑term secondment of 12 months. Applicants must obtain permission from their current line manager before applying.
Main duties of the job
- The postholder will work under the direction of a section manager and/or Medical Physics Expert to perform routine, implementation, and development work associated with providing radiotherapy physics services to the cancer centre.
- Responsibilities include:
- Commissioning, implementation, and clinical support of Elekta ProKnow.
- Specification, calibration, and QA of treatment machines, CT simulators, computer systems, and specialised devices.
- Repair, maintenance, and data networking of radiotherapy equipment.
- General quality assurance across multiple sections.
- Personal development, research, and development activities.
Job responsibilities
- Lead the setup and support of the All Wales Elekta ProKnow project (approximately 0.6 WTE).
- Provide treatment planning support (approx. 0.2 WTE).
- Perform routine QA checks and data verification (approx. 0.1 WTE).
- Advance continuous improvement initiatives for radiotherapy services across multiple sites, including the new Abergavenny satellite centre and future Velindre Cancer Centre.
Person Specification
Qualifications and/or Knowledge
- MSc in Medical Physics, Computer Science or equivalent.
- Completion of STP or other route to registration as a clinical scientist with the HCPC, or close to achieving it.
- PhD in Medical Physics (preferred).
- Published papers in the field of medical physics.
Experience
- Experience in radiotherapy physics through training or post.
- Hands‑on use of radiotherapy treatment machines, treatment planning systems, and radiation physics equipment.
- Knowledge of radiotherapy protocols and pathways.
- Experience in research and development initiatives.
Aptitude and Abilities
- Aptitude for mathematical calculations.
- Development of processes using peer‑acceptable procedures.
- Strong written documentation skills.
- Clear communication of complex scientific concepts to both scientists and non‑scientists.
- Proficiency with computer software, including development of complex scientific programs and spreadsheets.
- Diplomacy and interpersonal skills in team environments.
- Presentation experience to groups.
- Ability to speak Welsh (desired).
- Expertise in radiotherapy physics and advanced data manipulation.
- Use of dosemeters, 3D visualisation, and Monte‑Carlo radiation transport codes.
