Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of geotechnical and infrastructure design projects, with a strong focus on trenchless technology and underground works.
- Assist with geotechnical design and assessment for HDD, TBM / micro-tunnelling, auger boring, pipe jacking, shafts, launch and reception pits, culverts, and utility crossings.
- Plan, arrange, and support ground investigations, including scoping investigation requirements, preparing investigation plans, reviewing exploratory hole locations, and coordinating with contractors.
- Undertake and support site supervision of ground investigation works, including boreholes, trial pits, sampling, in-situ testing, logging, groundwater monitoring, and site records.
- Review and interpret ground investigation data, soil and rock descriptions, laboratory testing, groundwater conditions, geology, contamination information, and geotechnical risks.
- Prepare Geotechnical Interpretative Reports, GIRs, including ground models, design parameters, geotechnical risks, recommendations, and design assumptions.
- Support assessments for bore alignment, settlement, ground movement, excavation stability, shaft stability, temporary works, and constructability.
- Prepare calculations, technical notes, reports, specifications, drawings, and design documentation.
- Use Excel, Microsoft Office, and engineering software to prepare, check, and improve engineering calculations.
- Support coding, automation, digital engineering tools, and process improvements within the team.
- Work closely with engineers, technicians, CAD/BIM teams, project managers, contractors, and clients.
- Support and guide junior team members where required.
- Deliver accurate, high-quality work under tight deadlines.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a closely related discipline.
- Suitable for candidates with 1+ years’ experience at Placement or Graduate Engineer level, or candidates already working at Engineer level.
- Excellent understanding of soil and rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering principles.
- Good experience or strong understanding of planning and arranging ground investigations.
- Experience in site supervision of ground investigation works.
- Ability to write clear, professional Geotechnical Interpretative Reports, GIRs.
- Experience or strong interest in infrastructure, trenchless technology, utilities, rail, highways, water, civils, earthworks, or temporary works.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and technical documentation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight project deadlines.
- Willingness to work towards Chartered status with the Institution of Civil Engineers, ICE.
- Ability to support and guide more junior graduate engineers.
- A full UK driving licence is preferable due to potential site visits and ground investigation supervision duties.
- Must have the right to work in the UK; candidates who do not require visa sponsorship are preferred.
- Experience or interest in trenchless technology, including HDD, TBM / micro-tunnelling, auger boring, pipe jacking, and utility crossings.
- Understanding of trenchless design considerations, including ground risk, groundwater, settlement, and constructability preferable.
- Experience using engineering software such as GEO5, PLAXIS, Tekla Tedds, or equivalent (or willing to learn).
- Experience with other geotechnical software such as WALLAP, Slope/W, or similar would be beneficial.
- Experience with coding, VBA, Python, or automation of engineering calculations.
- Knowledge of Eurocodes, British Standards, Network Rail standards, utility provider requirements, highways, water, or rail infrastructure projects.
- Experience in settlement analysis, slope stability, retaining wall design, foundations, earthworks, trenchless design, tunnelling, shafts, or culvert works.
Academic Background
Candidates should have a strong academic background in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related discipline from an accredited university.
