Digital UX Designer

About the Role

We are hiring a Digital UX Designer with strong hands-on experience delivering UK Government digital services in line with the GDS Service Standard, and the ability to design in code using HTML, CSS, and component libraries. This is a delivery-focused role embedded within agile teams working on high-impact public services. You’ll champion user-centred design while ensuring your work can be implemented directly or easily handed off to developers in a code-ready state.

What You\’ll Do

You will be responsible for designing user-centred digital journeys for services used by citizens and professionals across government, ensuring usability, accessibility, and GDS compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design accessible, inclusive, and responsive service interfaces using GDS Design System components or equivalent design systems.
  • Produce code-ready prototypes using HTML, CSS, and design system libraries (e.g. GOV.UK Frontend, NHS.UK Frontend).
  • Collaborate daily with user researchers, developers, service designers, and product managers to iterate designs based on user needs and research evidence.
  • Participate in and prepare for GDS service assessments, ensuring design artefacts and rationale are well-documented.
  • Support and lead collaborative design activities including sketching workshops, ideation sessions, and co-design with users and stakeholders.
  • Translate user research and analytics data into actionable design decisions, advocating for user needs at all stages.
  • Implement or work closely with developers to ensure design fidelity in production.
  • Contribute to the evolution of internal design standards, design-to-code workflows, and best practice for public service delivery.

Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

  • Significant experience (5+ years) working as a UX Designer or Interaction Designer on UK Government or NHS digital services.
  • Deep understanding of the GDS Service Standard, GOV.UK Design System, and service design lifecycle (Discovery, Alpha, Beta, Live).
  • Strong practical experience in designing in code, including proficiency in:
  • Semantic HTML5
  • CSS (including BEM, responsive layout principles)
  • Use of design systems (e.g. GOV.UK Frontend, NHS Frontend, Bootstrap-based systems)
  • Ability to prototype at fidelity levels appropriate to the design stage, including functional browser-based prototypes.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards and inclusive design best practices.
  • Familiarity with Git-based workflows, version control, and design handoff tools.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch where appropriate—but with a focus on working design-to-code where feasible.
  • Desirable Attributes

    • Familiarity with agile ways of working and delivery in multidisciplinary teams.
    • Experience with templating frameworks (e.g. Nunjucks or Handlebars) or CMS-based component integrations.
    • Understanding of front-end performance considerations, responsive design, and progressive enhancement.
    • Experience running or contributing to usability testing and design critiques.
    • Exposure to working in environments subject to formal service assessments or internal assurance (e.g. GDS, NHS DDaT, or equivalent).
    • Passion for mentoring or supporting other designers to build capability in design-to-code practices.
