VCS Engineering is looking for a Graduate Engineer for a full-time entry-level hourly professional position. Specific responsibilities will vary corresponding with the individual’s experience, training, and certification. The Graduate Engineer is expected to complete tasks such as:
- Condition assessments/investigations
- Operate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment and undertake GPR surveys
- Support in the design of cathodic protection systems including calculations and drawings
- Cathodic protection quality control testing
- Non-destructive testing
- Install and troubleshoot instrumentation
- Prepare test reports
- Conduct research activities
- Generally support other Engineers and Project Managers as required
Graduate Engineers will work alongside Engineering Technicians to complete fieldwork.
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree or HND working towards a degree in Civil, Structural, Materials, Corrosion Engineering, Chemistry, or other similar engineering disciplines
- College/University internship or project work in infrastructure or materials field are strongly encouraged to apply
- Must be Glasgow based
Specialist Knowledge and Skills
- Structural analysis of existing structures
- Condition assessment of reinforced concrete structures
- Concrete repair technologies and techniques
- AutoCAD
- Concrete corrosion and cathodic protection
- Non-destructive testing of infrastructure
- Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) operation and data collection
- Ability to operate GPR equipment for the investigation and assessment of concrete structures
- Experience with GPR data interpretation and analysis would be advantageous
Environmental Conditions
VCS has offices located in Birmingham and Glasgow. Employees must be able to work from Glasgow office, can also work from Birmingham office if needed. There is a wide variety of on-site project conditions, including:
- Interior and exterior environments including sun exposure, cold temperate and a variety of precipitations
- Working on construction sites at heights, over water, active bridges, and confined space
Hours of Work
Standard work hours – 8 am to 5 pm, 40 hours per week. Some specific fieldwork requires night shift or weekend work due to limitations on access and client needs. This is not typical but does occur. Additional work as required to meet priorities and deadlines.
Required Travel
Travel is an important aspect of VCS work. Travel is to be expected about 50%-70% of the time. Travel with short notice may be required due to client and business expectations.
Physical Demands
Field work may be physically demanding, including:
- Working on one’s feet for up to a 10-hour day in the field
- Handling medium-sized power tools like a hammer drill and grinder
- Working from heights including climbing ladders, stairs, and scaffolding
- Ability to handle and operate specialist inspection equipment, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
Health and Safety
Health and safety is our top priority. Will be required to provide drug and alcohol testing, before and randomly during employment, based on our Drug Testing and Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
