About the Role
We're looking for a Solar Designer to join our team and take ownership of the technical design process for residential and commercial solar PV installations. You'll produce accurate, compliant system designs, create string diagrams, and manage DNO (Distribution Network Operator) applications from submission through approval.
Responsibilities
- System Design: Produce detailed solar PV layouts using industry software (e.g., PVsol, OpenSolar, Helioscope), optimising for energy yield, shading, and roof constraints.
- String Diagrams: Create clear, accurate string configuration diagrams showing panel groupings, inverter connections, and DC/AC wiring layouts.
- DNO Applications: Prepare and submit G98/G99 applications, liaise with DNOs to resolve queries, and track applications through to approval.
- Technical Documentation: Generate MCS-compliant documentation packs including datasheets, performance estimates, and installation drawings.
- Site Assessment Support: Review site surveys, satellite imagery, and structural reports to inform design decisions.
- Collaboration: Work closely with sales, installation, and project management teams to ensure designs are buildable and meet customer expectations.
- Compliance: Ensure all designs meet current regulations (BS 7671, MCS standards, G98/G99 requirements, and local planning considerations).
Requirements
- Proven experience designing solar PV systems for residential and/or commercial projects.
- Strong working knowledge of string sizing, inverter selection, and DC system design principles.
- Hands-on experience with DNO application processes (G98/G99).
- Proficiency in solar design software (PVsol, OpenSolar, Helioscope, or similar).
- Familiarity with MCS certification requirements and UK electrical regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills able to explain technical concepts to non-technical colleagues and customers.
Desirable
- Electrical qualifications (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).
- Experience with battery storage system design.
- Knowledge of EV charger integration.
- CAD proficiency (AutoCAD, SketchUp).
- Understanding of structural loading considerations for roof-mounted systems.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary (based on experience).
- Flexible/hybrid working options.
- Ongoing training and professional development.
- Opportunity to contribute to the UK's renewable energy transition.
