Overview

You will be responsible for electrical systems compliance across all of Vattenfall Heat UK’s electrical infrastructure. As the subject matter expert on electrical systems, you shall be the Lead Authorising Engineer for the UK business and will advise and support projects on electrical equipment, design, and commissioning. You will ensure that permitted activities on all of Vattenfall’s electrical apparatus follow Safe Systems of Work that comply with legislation and ensure safety from the system and its application. You will be the custodian and co-author of the company’s electrical procedures and Safe Systems of Work and ensure operators are trained and competent to undertake the work.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director Asset Management, Heads of Operations & Delivery, and Operations Managers to ensure all contracts and electrical activities are effectively managed to comply with statutory and regulatory electrical requirements.
  • Manage the company’s electrical technical compliance requirements to satisfy internal and external requirements.
  • Represent the Company to customers and external agencies on electrical safety matters.
  • Ensure Operations Managers implement and maintain good engineering practices across the business, including:
  • Development of the company’s electrical maintenance management systems.
  • Management of the Electrical Technical Audit Process and assistance with audits to ensure engineering standards are implemented and maintained.
  • Adherence to company procedures and standards as expressed in the Company Handbooks by all staff.
  • Mentor, develop, and verify training and competence of staff working on electrical systems.
  • Assist with mobilisation of new contracts.
  • Specific Authorising Engineer duties include:
    • Assess and appoint Authorised Persons (APs) where appropriate.
    • Own, and develop where necessary, the Electrical Safe Systems of Work.
    • Maintain a register of APs with training records and the extent of systems and installations they are responsible for.
    • Define and implement required training for appointment of APs.
    • Train and mentor APs to meet required standards and audit them regularly.
    • Act as focal point for communication or escalation with APs.
    • Ensure APs are familiar with and able to produce safety documentation.
    • Ensure a consistent approach to implementing safety rules.
    • Provide advice and guidance to the Director of Asset Management and report any systematic issues or deficiencies.
    • Update and amend rule sets and related documentation with Director of Asset Management approval; arbitrate on technical disputes or interpretations of rule sets.
    • Act as a focal point for health and safety information within your area of expertise; liaise with other teams to meet strategic objectives; develop and deliver training to raise engineering standards.
  • Maintain familiarity with the company’s safety rules and ensure a consistent safety culture across teams.
  • Qualifications

    • Competent 11kV or 33kV Authorising Engineer or Senior Authorised Person on an established DNO Distribution Network.
    • Proven track record of working on and around the High Voltage distribution network.
    • Strong understanding of engineering policy, procedures, and legislation; sound decision-making skills.
    • Ability to identify and develop operational processes to improve outputs and measure success.
    • Effective communication and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Knowledge of current Health, Safety and Environment legislation.
    • Ability to work within budget and programmed timescales; capable of working in a team with clients, designers, and project staff.
    • Full Driving Licence – must cover sites in London, Bristol and Edinburgh.
