An established claimant Top 100 firm is looking to recruit a Chartered Legal Executive or Solicitor to join its specialist Military department, based in Cardiff with hybrid working. The team is dedicated to ensuring serving and former service personnel have access to the specialist legal advice they need when the Ministry of Defence has failed in its duty of care. The department advises on a wide range of military-related claims, including military deafness and cold and heat injuries, acting for clients across England and Wales.
The wider department is sizeable, with around 60 lawyers and support staff, but work is delivered through smaller, focused teams. This role will sit within a supportive and well-resourced structure, offering hands-on experience alongside experienced supervisors.
The Role
This position focuses on managing a litigated caseload of multitrack personal injury claims and would suit someone comfortable running files with a good degree of autonomy, while still having access to senior support. You will be responsible for handling matters from pre-action through to settlement or trial, including:
- Managing a multitrack PI caseload (including industrial disease, EL/PL, RTA, occupiers’ liability and product liability claims)
- Taking initial instructions and assessing liability, causation and quantum
- Setting and maintaining case strategy, with clear plans and key milestones
- Drafting core documents such as letters of claim and response, pleadings, witness statements, schedules and counter-schedules of loss
- Instructing and managing medical and non-medical experts, as well as counsel where appropriate
- Handling disclosure, including inspection and preparation of trial-ready (including electronic) bundles
- Preparing for and attending CMCs, CCMCs, PTRs and interlocutory hearings, with some routine advocacy
- Managing costs budgeting and costs management with support from specialist costs lawyers
- Advising on settlement strategy, Part 36 offers and ADR
- Pursuing interim payments and supporting rehabilitation where appropriate
- Delivering clear, high-quality advice to clients throughout the litigation process
You will also assist with the supervision of trainees and paralegals, contribute to internal knowledge sharing, and support wider business development activity where agreed.
About You
