The Susie Cooper Community Gardeners (SCCGs) is a community-based group with the aim of improving the Susie Cooper Community Garden and surrounding area by planting flowers and shrubs to make the local area in and around Milton, Stoke-on-Trent a more pleasant place to live, work and visit. We need volunteers to help continue to improve the Community Garden and surrounding areas.
Main Activities:
- Working as part of a team
- Help with the upkeep, development and protection of the garden so that it can be enjoyed by everyone
- General tidying up
- Dead-heading
- Weeding borders
- Pruning trees, shrubs and plants
- Propagating and raising young plants
- Grass cutting – with training
- Being a friendly face for visitors to the gardens answering any questions they may have
- Helping out with the planned development of the garden
- Litter picking
- Setting up and removal of displays
Time Commitment: To be arranged but ideally 2 hours a week.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Some experience of gardening would be an advantage but not essential
- Enjoy working as part of a team
- Reasonably fit
- Willing to work out of doors when the weather is potentially cold or wet
Training and Support: No formal training is provided however there will be knowledge sharing between everyone involved with the Susie Cooper Community Gardeners to ensure every session is a learning opportunity. If appropriate, training will be given in the safe use of the lawn mower. All volunteers have the opportunity to provide feedback and share ideas with the committee members.
