We are currently recruiting for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join a London-based Council on an initial 3-month rolling contract, with the potential for ongoing work. The role will have a particular focus on Health & Safety and Food Safety, providing support across both reactive and proactive workstreams.
The Role
The successful Environmental Health Officer will be responsible for a varied caseload covering reactive Health & Safety complaints, accident investigations and inspections, alongside some proactive work. The role will also include Food Safety inspections, with a focus on premises currently rated C–E, as well as some unrated premises.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and respond to reactive Health & Safety complaints.
- Undertake accident investigations and inspections, taking appropriate enforcement action where required.
- Carry out proactive Health & Safety interventions and inspections.
- Assess compliance with relevant Health & Safety legislation and provide advice to businesses.
- Undertake Food Safety inspections across a range of food premises.
- Conduct inspections of premises currently rated C, D and E, as well as some unrated premises.
- Identify risks and non-compliance and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
- Prepare clear and accurate inspection reports, notices and case documentation.
- Manage a varied caseload effectively and ensure cases are progressed within appropriate timescales.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and other Council departments where required.
- Provide professional advice and guidance to businesses, ensuring statutory requirements are understood and followed.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Environmental Health Officer who can hit the ground running and work confidently across both Health & Safety and Food Safety. You should have:
- Previous Local Authority Environmental Health experience.
- Practical experience undertaking Health & Safety investigations and inspections.
- Experience dealing with reactive complaints and accident investigations.
- Experience carrying out proactive Health & Safety work.
- Solid Food Safety inspection experience, ideally across a range of risk-rated premises.
- Experience inspecting C–E rated and unrated food businesses would be highly desirable.
- Good knowledge of relevant Environmental Health legislation and enforcement procedures.
- Strong investigation, report-writing and evidence-gathering skills.
- The ability to manage your own caseload and work independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, with 3 days per week on site in London.
