Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Power Generation and Storage Technologist to join our dynamic energy solutions team, reporting to the Senior Director of Energy Solutions & Development. This collaborative role is integral to both shaping and delivering advanced power generation and storage technologies for hyperscale AI and cloud data centres. The successful candidate will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop, integrate, and optimise solutions that meet the unique demands of large-scale digital infrastructure. Conducting thorough techno-economic studies, you will help identify and present the most effective solutions, ensuring recommendations are outcome-driven and aligned with the energy strategy. The technologist will also provide support in developing creative funding and operating models, such as Energy as a Service, always with an eye toward practical implementation and measurable results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate collaborative efforts in the design, implementation, and optimisation of power generation systems—including thermal, hydro, wind, and solar—tailored for hyperscale AI and cloud data centres, with an unwavering focus on delivering effective outcomes.
  • Work cross-functionally to assess, select, and integrate energy storage solutions (e.g., batteries, flywheels, pumped hydro) that deliver resilient and scalable results for data centre operations.
  • Conduct comprehensive techno-economic studies, evaluating technologies based on cost, speed, complexity, and public acceptance, with clear emphasis on actionable solutions and outcome-oriented recommendations.
  • Clearly communicate and present findings to all stakeholders, ensuring alignment and support for optimal solutions and actionable business cases.
  • Engage collaboratively with engineering, R&D, project management, and external partners to drive innovative and practical energy solutions, maintaining a strong focus on successful outcomes for hyperscale digital infrastructure.
  • Monitor industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes, contributing strategic input to technology roadmaps that are centered on practical solutions and impactful results.
  • Support the development, evaluation, and implementation of various funding and operating models—such as Energy as a Service—ensuring these approaches are both feasible and outcome-driven.
  • Coach and mentor junior technologists and engineers, encouraging a collaborative team environment focused on technical excellence and successful project delivery.
  • Ensure all projects are executed in compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, as well as applicable industry regulations, to guarantee successful and responsible project outcomes.

Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field; Chartered Engineer status is an asset.

Experience & Skills:

  • At least 8 years of experience in power generation and/or energy storage development, with a minimum of 3 years in a senior or leadership role, ideally within data centre energy systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the development and deployment of islanded, private wire, and paralleled electricity generation plant, including integration with both renewable and conventional technologies.
  • Experience in integrating renewable and conventional energy sources with advanced storage, focusing on real-world solutions and tangible outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of grid integration, power electronics, and system controls as they relate to hyperscale AI and cloud data centres.
  • Proven track record in conducting techno-economic studies and presenting recommendations that drive decisions and deliver measurable results.
  • Project delivery experience from feasibility through commissioning and optimisation, emphasising collaborative approaches and successful results.
  • Background in developing or supporting funding and operating models, such as Energy as a Service, for large-scale energy projects.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to analyse complex problems and collaboratively develop innovative, commercially viable solutions that support the company’s energy strategy and deliver outcomes.
