Key Responsibilities

  • Specify and approve field instrumentation and control equipment
  • Support installation and commissioning of new systems to enhance existing control and instrumentation infrastructure
  • Maintain and optimise SCADA systems to improve operational efficiency and performance
  • Identify process control issues and develop effective control strategies in collaboration with engineering and operations teams
  • Provide technical support and fault diagnosis across DCS, SCADA, and PLC systems
  • Coordinate with suppliers and contractors to resolve technical issues and ensure project delivery
  • Perform routine system maintenance including backups, disaster recovery planning/testing, and system diagnostics through log analysis
  • Support response to unplanned outages and system failures
  • Analyse operational data and produce technical reports with findings and recommendations
  • Engage with internal stakeholders, external suppliers, and regulatory bodies where required
  • Manage procurement of control and instrumentation equipment
  • Develop and update testing procedures
  • Contribute to the design of hardware and software functional specifications for automation systems
  • Support development of technical proposals and maintain system documentation and data libraries
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation such as scopes of work, schematics, network diagrams, I/O schedules, and loop drawings
  • Review control system designs (including PLC, DCS, SIS, and SCADA architectures)
  • Assist with commissioning activities, including preparation of documentation and on-site support
  • Participate in technical reviews such as P&IDs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, FATs, and SATs

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 5-10 years' relevant industry experience in control and instrumentation engineering
  • Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent with strong practical experience
  • Hands-on experience with field instrumentation and system integration
  • Strong background in industrial control systems design, maintenance, and troubleshooting (PLC, SCADA, DCS, SIS)
  • Experience with industrial communication networks and protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Industrial Ethernet)
  • Proven experience in commissioning and fault finding on-site
  • Experience supervising installation and commissioning activities
  • Familiarity with FAT and SAT processes
  • Strong IT skills
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards (e.g., hazardous area compliance and major hazard regulations)
  • Awareness of industry standards such as BS 7671, BS EN 60079, and functional safety standards
  • Understanding of emerging technologies in automation and control

Desirable Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (or similar)
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution
  • Experience with SCADA platforms and industrial control systems from major vendors
  • Exposure to PLC/SCADA/DCS programming
  • Knowledge of industrial networking, cybersecurity, and system architecture
  • Experience with server environments, virtualisation, and network management
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity standards (e.g., IEC 62443)
  • Experience configuring and managing firewalls
  • Knowledge of industrial protocols and OPC interfaces
  • Experience supporting Windows Server environments and hardware
  • Experience reviewing control system hardware and software designs
