A leading advanced engineering and technology organisation is seeking a Senior System Design Engineer to join its growing power electronics and innovation team in Birmingham. This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge power conversion systems across sectors including electric vehicles, transportation, and renewable energy. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, simulation, integration, and optimisation of advanced power electronics converter systems, while also supporting the application of AI and generative AI within engineering design processes.
The Role
- System design and development of power electronics converter prototypes
- Requirements analysis, system architecture, simulation, and optimisation
- System integration, component selection, sourcing, and technical specification definition
- Integration and validation testing including test planning and technical reviews
- Supporting technical roadmap development and future technology planning
- Collaboration with suppliers, customers, universities, and research partners
- Technical documentation and project archiving
- Supporting innovation and continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering team
What We're Looking For
Candidates should have experience in:
- Power electronics system design and converter development
- Converter topologies including AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC
- IGBT or SiC MOSFET-based systems (1200V+)
- Control loop design, simulation, and testing
- Thermal analysis, efficiency mapping, and loss analysis
- Multi-level converter technologies
- Simulation and engineering tools such as MATLAB, PLECS, CAD, CAE, or Ansys
- Hardware integration and system-level engineering
We're particularly interested in engineers with exposure to:
- AI or generative AI applications within engineering or design workflows
- Advanced automotive, rail, renewable energy, or industrial power systems
Requirements
- Degree qualified in Power Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Ideally 5+ years' industry experience
- PhD-qualified candidates with relevant commercial experience are also encouraged to apply
- Strong communication and technical documentation skills
- Ability to work within multidisciplinary engineering teams
