An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering business delivering complex projects across the utilities and infrastructure sectors. This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects from initial concept through to commissioning, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop innovative and practical design solutions.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of mechanical systems and equipment, ensuring projects are completed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and technical excellence. Working closely with process, electrical, and controls engineers, you will produce detailed design packages, technical documentation, and fabrication drawings while supporting projects throughout their lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce mechanical designs in line with project specifications and client requirements.
  • Develop Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and associated design documentation.
  • Create and coordinate 3D models and engineering layouts.
  • Produce general arrangement drawings, sections, elevations, and fabrication drawings.
  • Complete equipment sizing calculations and technical schedules.
  • Prepare technical specifications and design submissions.
  • Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain technical information and quotations.
  • Attend project meetings and provide technical support throughout project delivery.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, environmental, and health & safety standards.
  • Support projects from design through to installation and commissioning.

The Person

We are keen to speak with candidates who possess:

  • HNC, HND or Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 4 years' experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer position.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills using software such as Revit, Inventor, SolidWorks or similar.
  • Experience producing fabrication and manufacturing drawings.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and project coordination abilities.
  • A proactive and innovative approach to engineering design.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience using Plant 3D, Navisworks or similar design software.
  • Knowledge of BIM processes and standards.
  • Experience within utilities, water treatment, process engineering, M&E contracting, or related industries.
  • Exposure to estimating, commercial awareness, or project cost control.
