VANRATH are recruiting a Market Operator for a large high-level Utility organisation in Belfast. Reporting into Head of Networks, this is a Permanent role with hybrid working arrangements (3 days in the office, car parking, free lunches).
Remuneration
£40,000 - £44,000 + High Level Benefits (Bonus, up to 20% pension, 36 + 3 holidays, etc).
Responsibilities
The Market Operator supports the delivery of all Market Operations activities, including operating and monitoring the trading desk on a rotating shift basis (approximately one week every 4-6 weeks). A comprehensive three-month training programme is provided on joining, leading to certification to operate electricity market auctions as part of the trading desk team.
The role operates in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, requiring close collaboration with colleagues to ensure effective cover and support across real-time, daily, weekly, and monthly market activities. During auctions, the Market Operator oversees end-to-end operational activities, verifies market results, and works closely with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues within tight timeframes.
Key stakeholders include internal operations, IT and control centres, as well as external service providers, traders, system operators, interconnector owners, and other UK and European market operators.
Outside of trading desk duties, the role supports system testing, process improvement, market analysis, training, and operational risk management.
- Monitoring and validating market inputs, auctions, and outputs to ensure accuracy and timeliness
- Performing daily operational checks and resolving issues using agreed procedures
- Managing incidents, coordinating stakeholders, and ensuring effective handovers between shifts
- Supporting system releases, user acceptance testing, and service changes
- Reviewing and improving processes to enhance efficiency, compliance, and risk management
- Producing market analysis and reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Supporting training and providing standby cover as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required
- Approximately three years of experience in a data-driven and/or critical operational role
- Strong numerical and analytical capability
- Proven ability to manage strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Intermediate proficiency in Excel
- Experience working across multiple systems simultaneously, with the ability to quickly learn and troubleshoot operational processes
- Strong communication skills with the confidence to work cross-functionally
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team under time pressure, with a flexible approach to work
- Proficient in MS Office applications and document management systems (e.g. SharePoint)
