An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Assistant Shift Team Leader to join a high-performing Operations team within a major energy generation environment. This role will support the Shift Team Leader in coordination, management, and operation of all production activities, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations while meeting business and performance targets. The successful candidate will also deputise for the Shift Team Leader when required, taking full operational responsibility for plant assets and acting as Incident Controller outside normal hours where necessary.

Working within a dynamic operations environment, you will play a key role in ensuring plant performance, operational compliance, safety, and team leadership standards are consistently achieved. Key Responsibilities

  • Plant Operations
    • Support the safe and efficient operation of plant in line with procedures and operational instructions
    • Assist in optimising plant performance and resource utilisation
    • Facilitate plant start‑up and shutdown activities in accordance with grid and operational requirements
    • Monitor plant performance, identify operational issues, and implement corrective actions
    • Ensure dispatch instructions are achieved within required tolerances and contractual obligations
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Operate within the Safety Document System as a Control Person and Senior Authorised Person for plant and HV apparatus up to 275KV
    • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental procedures
    • Act as Incident Controller during emergency situations when required
    • Devise and implement isolation schemes for planned and reactive maintenance activities
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Support the Shift Team Leader in managing and developing the shift operations team
    • Promote effective communication, teamwork, and high performance standards
    • Assist with training, coaching, and development of operational personnel
    • Lead by example in areas including safety, conduct, and operational excellence
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Review and update operational procedures and documentation
    • Analyse plant performance data to improve efficiency and reliability
    • Support or lead operational improvement projects and outage activities
    • Contribute to long and short‑term operational initiatives across the business

The Person

We are keen to speak with candidates who have:

  • Significant experience within plant operations and/or maintenance environments
  • Strong understanding of operational procedures, safety systems, and engineering compliance requirements
  • Experience operating within Safety Document Systems and HV environments up to 275KV
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a shift operations environment
  • A proactive and flexible approach with strong problem-solving capability

Desirable Experience

  • Previous supervisory or management experience
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of electricity markets and ISEM
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualification

Qualifications

  • HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline, or extensive relevant industry experience
