VANRATH are delighted to be partnering with a highly successful and rapidly expanding engineering manufacturer to recruit an Area Sales Manager. Our client designs and manufactures specialist engineered infrastructure solutions for critical power, electrical distribution and industrial applications across the UK and Ireland. Following significant investment and continued growth within the switchgear and data centre sectors, they are seeking a commercially driven Business Development professional to support the next phase of expansion.
This is a strategic and customer-facing role offering the opportunity to play a key part in developing long-term commercial relationships, identifying new market opportunities and securing high-value projects within technically demanding sectors.
The Role
- Reporting to senior management, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving new business acquisition and expanding key accounts across the switchgear, critical power and data centre markets.
- Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and execute a business development strategy aligned to company growth objectives.
- Identify and secure new project opportunities across switchgear, power distribution, energy infrastructure and data centre markets.
- Build relationships with contractors, consultants, OEMs, end users and project stakeholders.
- Manage the full sales lifecycle from initial engagement through to commercial negotiation and contract award.
- Monitor tender opportunities and coordinate submissions for public and private sector projects.
- Maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities and provide regular forecasting and reporting.
- Represent the business at industry events, trade exhibitions and networking functions.
- Conduct market analysis to identify emerging sectors, competitor activity and potential areas for growth.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, estimating and operations teams to ensure commercially viable solutions are delivered.
- Support the development of strategic partnerships and framework agreements.
The Person
- To be considered, candidates must demonstrate:
- Minimum 5 years' business development, sales or commercial experience within the switchgear, electrical infrastructure, power distribution or data centre manufacturing sectors.
- Background in Data Centres / Switchgear (not just selling into them).
- Experience working directly for a switchgear manufacturer, electrical engineering business, critical power provider, data centre infrastructure manufacturer or similar technical environment.
- Experience managing tender processes, commercial proposals and contract negotiations.
- Strong understanding of electrical infrastructure projects and associated supply chains.
- Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills.
- Self-motivated and capable of operating autonomously while contributing to wider business objectives.
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to identify profitable growth opportunities.
- Desirable
- Knowledge of MV/LV switchgear, modular power solutions, critical power systems or data centre infrastructure.
- Existing network of contacts within the electrical engineering, utilities or data centre sectors.
- Experience selling engineered or manufactured solutions on a project basis.
