We are recruiting a caretaker to be responsible for opening and closing the building, setting up and taking down meeting rooms, performing health and safety checks, record keeping and cleaning duties for the building. The role is for a period of 12+ months with a possible extension.

Shift pattern:

  • Mon 6-10pm
  • Tue 8-11am
  • Wed 8-11am
  • Thu 8-11.30am
  • Fri 6-10pm

Some flexibility is required to meet business requirements and staff leave. Remuneration is £13.69 per hour, alongside holiday entitlement.

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out a full range of caretaking duties relating to the Centre and the Sea Cadets Building (e.g. replacing light bulbs and plugs, minor repairs of equipment), and set up and take down equipment for user groups as appropriate.
  • Set up rooms for use by Council staff, groups and organisations; assist them where necessary, e.g. preparation of refreshments and snacks.
  • Carry out a range of cleaning duties including washing, sweeping, vacuum cleaning all areas, including toilets and kitchen on a daily basis, washing windows weekly, emptying litter bins and polishing.
  • Check all rooms, extinguish lights, empty bins, clean rooms and secure the building before leaving the premises, when necessary.
  • Act as a designated key holder and be available for any emergency involving the Centre.
  • Monitor all vehicles using the car park at the building, ensuring the car park is clean and free from obstruction or debris, removing leaves, salting and clearing snow during inclement weather.
  • Report any defects, breakages or damages in line with maintenance protocol and carry out necessary checks and procedures per Council Policy regarding the use of the Community Minibuses.

The Ideal Person:

  • 5 GCSE passes at grades A-C, NVQ level 2 or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience working as a caretaker with specific experience in at least three of the following areas: Cleaning, Maintenance Work, Erecting/dismantling and storing equipment, Security, First Aid.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and CoSHH.
  • Knowledge of cleaning material stock‑taking.
  • A full current driving licence valid in the UK and access to a car or other transport that enables you to carry out the duties of the post.
