Head of Indexing Research
Serve as Vanguard’s primary thought leader on the impact that index fund investing has on giving investors the best chance of investment success. Represent the firm as a senior ambassador at high-profile internal and external events, shaping the conversation around market trends and portfolio construction. Lead a team of senior investment strategists and specialists to drive cutting-edge research, thought leadership, and strategic influence across the investment landscape.
Core Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead a strategic research agenda focused on indexing and broader investment strategy topics, in collaboration with senior stakeholders across government relations, PR/marketing/sales, and investment management.
- Hire, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of investment strategists and senior specialists. Provide coaching, performance evaluations, and career development aligned with Vanguard’s leadership standards.
- Oversee full-stack research execution, including ideation, quantitative and qualitative analysis, publication development, stakeholder engagement, and public ambassadorship.
- Represent Vanguard as an external authority on portfolio construction and investment advice in senior public-speaking forums with clients, regulators, policymakers, and the broader asset management community.
- Produce high-impact research to support Vanguard’s portfolio construction, regulatory advocacy, PR campaigns, and product development efforts.
- Contribute to Vanguard’s global investment research agenda by initiating and collaborating on research projects that reinforce the firm’s leadership in the industry.
- Drive the ongoing review and enhancement of Vanguard’s investment methodology, including detailed audits and empirical recommendations based on market conditions.
- Serve on divisional and corporate teams, providing mentorship and strategic input across the organization.
- Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Ten years of investment management work experience with at least five years focused on indexing topics.
- Leadership experience required.
- Dynamic public speaker with experience engaging audiences of various sizes across diverse venues, including conferences, workshops, and large-scale industry events.
- Undergraduate degree in finance or statistics or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Graduate degree required.
- PhD or PhD-level equivalent experience required.
- CFA preferred.
