We are seeking an engineer who is passionate about developing designs for projects and committed to adding value for our customers both at home and abroad. The ideal candidate will have the ability to follow challenging standards and demonstrate persistence in achieving results. This position is suited to someone with a specialist, technical, and administrative background who enjoys working in a highly structured and predictable environment. It involves routine tasks, seeing projects through to completion, and working in a friendly, logical, and systematic manner. The role requires adherence to clearly defined work parameters, rules, and procedures, and calls for a patient and hardworking individual. The successful candidate should be routine-oriented, methodical, thorough, compliant, cautious, sensitive, diplomatic, self-disciplined, amiable, and accommodating.

Role Responsibilities:

  • This position will be part of the UK & Ireland Airports team, responsible for developing local knowledge systems and building site expertise.
  • Initially, the successful candidate will support operations at Manchester Airport and contribute to bids for other regional airports in the future.
  • The role involves extensive customer and supplier engagement, with on-site presence required as needed.
  • Occasional travel to other Vanderlande locations within the UK may also be necessary.
  • Act as a Mechanical/Layout/Project Engineer with a degree or HND qualification and at least 2 years of experience in automated material handling systems (e.g., baggage, parcel, warehouse, conveyor).
  • Ensure mechanical system designs comply with relevant safety standards and CDM regulations, including performing detailed risk assessments.
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D AutoCAD; experience with Navisworks (Clash Detection), Revit, and BIM is advantageous.
  • Familiar with building interfaces, services, steelwork, and mezzanines.
  • Develop layouts and documentation required for site installation teams.
  • Possess strong equipment knowledge to produce accurate specifications.
  • Conduct risk assessments and mitigate project uncertainties through proactive measures.
  • Apply knowledge of machinery safety standards to support operation and maintenance.
  • Work independently or collaboratively, taking ownership of design responsibilities.
  • Coordinate designs with customers and other Vanderlande disciplines.
  • Engage in continuous learning of processes and equipment.
  • Willing to travel for site support within the UK and abroad.
  • Confidently present design options to teams, customers, and consultants.
  • Ensure engineered system designs are manufacturable within budget constraints.
  • Understand and support mechanical activity breakdown and engineering planning.
  • Protect Vanderlande’s interests in dealings with customers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate third-party equipment supply and integration.
  • Commit to continuous improvement of personal skills, processes, policies, and procedures.

Role Qualification And Skills:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of design standards and safety requirements; working knowledge of the Machinery Directive preferred.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment (electrical, mechanical, software, safety).
  • Structured approach to design and problem-solving with an open mindset.
  • Flexible regarding working hours and location.
