Overview
Van Walt is seeking a highly motivated and versatile individual to join our technical department. This hands-on role offers a unique blend of responsibilities with approximately 70% office work and 30% field base work. Must be flexible with a proactive attitude, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Configure, assemble, and test telemetry systems and related hardware in the workshop.
- Accurately follow technical documentation, drawings, and work instructions.
- Maintain technical documentation such as user manuals and service logs.
- Undertake compliance testing, product validation, and quality assurance procedures.
- Perform installation, servicing, and maintenance of equipment and systems on customer sites.
- Provide technical support to customers, including troubleshooting, diagnostics, and resolving product issues.
- Deliver hands-on technical demonstrations and training sessions for both internal staff and clients.
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of rental equipment to ensure readiness and quality standards are consistently met.
- Ensure safe and effective use of hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment during all tasks.
- Collaborate with the wider technical team to support research, development, and continuous improvement activities.
- Help out with general warehouse operations when required such as stock takes and packing.
- Flexibility to travel for work and carry out varied site work when required.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Proven mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience
- Confidence working in both field and office environments
- Strong problem-solving skills with a methodical and practical approach to tasks
- Attention to detail and methodical record keeping
- Proficiency in the safe and effective use of a wide range of hand and power tools
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a methodical and analytical approach
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrates a proactive approach to tasks and problem-solving, with the ability to anticipate needs and take initiative without prompting
- Awareness of health & safety standards and risk assessment procedures
- Full UK driving licence (essential for fieldwork and site visits)
- Knowledge of SDI-12 / Modbus systems
- Basic understanding of electronics and wiring
- Competence in interpreting technical drawings or schematics
- Mechanical or engineering qualification (NVQ, HNC, or degree level) or equivalent practical experience
