We currently require an accounts & Finance Controller to join the team on a flexible part-time fully remote basis.
We are seeking an experienced Accounts & Finance Controller to support and strengthen the financial governance of a small UK-based procurement business, with a particular focus on UK statutory compliance and public sector-related financial requirements.
Working remotely on a part-time basis, this role will be responsible for improving financial controls, managing cash flow, producing robust monthly reporting, and ensuring all statutory and regulatory obligations are met. The role will also provide cover for the Finance Manager when required and support financial processes associated with public sector clients and frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Control, Governance & Compliance
- Review, implement, and continuously improve financial controls in line with UK accounting standards and best practice.
- Ensure compliance with internal financial policies and public sector governance expectations.
- Maintain appropriate audit trails and documentation to support public sector transparency and accountability.
- Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including:
- Purchase ledger and sales ledger
- Bank and balance sheet reconciliations
- Expense and credit card processing
- Monitor and manage company cash balances.
- Prepare and maintain short- and medium-term cash flow forecasts.
- Manage payment runs and supplier payments, with particular attention to public sector payment terms and prompt payment requirements.
- Prepare accurate monthly management accounts.
- Produce variance analysis against budget and forecast.
- Provide clear financial insight to management to support decision-making.
- Prepare and submit UK VAT returns, ensuring correct treatment of public sector and procurement-related transactions.
- Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements, including PAYE and payroll-related submissions (where applicable).
- Support preparation of year-end statutory accounts under UK GAAP (FRS 102), liaising with external accountants and auditors.
- Ensure compliance with Companies House filing requirements.
- Maintain records in line with UK statutory retention requirements.
- Support financial processes related to public sector contracts, frameworks, and clients.
- Ensure compliance with public sector invoicing, reporting, and audit requirements.
- Assist with financial information requests, audits, or compliance reviews from public sector bodies.
- Maintain and improve finance systems, spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
- Ensure robust financial controls within procurement and purchasing processes.
- Work closely with operational and management teams to ensure financial controls align with business activity.
Skills & Experience Required
- AAT qualified (Level 3 or Level 4) or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in an accounts, finance controller, or senior finance role within the UK.
- Strong working knowledge of UK statutory accounting, VAT, and HMRC requirements.
- Experience producing monthly management accounts.
- Experience working with or supporting public sector organisations or contracts.
- Strong Excel skills and experience using accounting software.
- Experience of using Sage Intact would be a definite advantage.
- High level of accuracy, organisation, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently in a small business environment.
