We are recruiting for an experienced Team Leader to join the Valuation Office Agency's National Valuation Unit (NVU) within the Built Environment and Minerals Surveying Team (BEAMS). The Minerals team is responsible for valuing some of the most highly specialised and high-value properties in the sector. This includes the non-domestic rating of mineral and waste industry assets such as energy-from-waste facilities, quarries, brickworks and landfill sites. The team also supports District Valuer Services (DVS) with taxation valuations and the preparation of mining subsidence reports.
In this role, you will lead a geographically dispersed, multi-skilled team of valuers, fostering collaboration, inclusion, and a culture of continuous improvement. You will be accountable for delivering the team's strategic and operational objectives, working closely with the Unit Head, the Grade 6 Minerals Sector Lead, and the G7 Sector Leads. As a key member of the leadership team, you will bring energy and commitment to developing our future leaders, creating opportunities for growth, technical excellence, and ongoing professional development.
Responsibilities
- Ability to balance leadership responsibilities with specialist casework, with a proportion of your time spent undertaking valuation casework. The level of casework will vary depending on team size, leadership span, and changing business requirements.
- Experience in Non-Domestic Rating (NDR), particularly Contractor's Basis valuations, is desirable as this provides a strong foundation on which to build technical expertise in minerals and waste specialist valuations.
- Lead a team of valuers within the BEAMS Minerals Team, coordinating workloads and working closely with technical sector leads to ensure consistent technical guidance and support.
- Monitor operational performance against strategic targets, agreeing clear objectives, identifying issues early, and recommending timely and effective actions.
- Proactively manage risks, anticipating challenges, understanding root causes, and putting forward practical solutions.
- Manage resource effectively, working with the Grade 6 Operational Head and G7 Valuation Leads to identify where resource can be redeployed to meet changing operational priorities set by the Unit Head and NVU Director.
- Support regular coaching and development conversations, ensuring that development plans and learner journeys set by the Development Lead and Grade 6 Minerals Operational Lead are fully supported, monitored, and actively progressed.
- Promote an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative working environment where all colleagues feel valued for their individual contributions.
- Lead the team through change, clearly communicating the need for change, highlighting the benefits, and ensuring colleagues feel engaged and involved in shaping implementation plans.
- Travel and overnight stays away from home are necessary to facilitate work delivery including valuation and inspections. We are reasonable with our expectations and provide flexible working arrangements to support this need.
